Lord of the ring road — JRR Tolkien’s war against the motor car
In the posthumously published satire The Bovadium Fragments, the Hobbit creator inveighs against car culture
As #Tolkien became professor of Anglo-Saxon in Oxford century ago, the city’s Morris Motors became Britain’s biggest car maker. There's a certain inevitability he would flourish a poison pen on the topic. I review THE BOVADIUM FRAGMENTS in today's Times. www.thetimes.com/culture/book...

I’m new to the game too — only level 11. Minor advice — don’t worry about which classes are basic or advanced. Beornings are “advanced” but I’ve found them easy. And don’t worry too much about every side quest. There are too many to worry about them all. Unless you like finding handkerchiefs.

A beat-up copy of “The Atlas of Middle Earth” (1981 edition) from my public library.
I’m reading Fonstad’s “The Atlas of Middle Earth” for the first time and I can’t remember when I loved a book about Tolkien’s works so much. Thank you, public library.

Middle-earth is part of his. 😂

Had a moment of anxiety today. There was a screen in the background with Rings of Power on. Queued up the amazing soundtrack by @bearmccreary.bsky.social on my phone — now everything is well and calm again.

A snowy pathway between buildings.
A squirrel sitting in a snow-covered tree.
Way more snow in Houston than there should be.

As a decent human — I wish you the best of luck. As a Houstonian — eh, I get it.

Great news! This will be a benefit to me when I retire too since I worked a regular job, taught in public schools and now teach in a private school.

First Animated Hobbit - directed by Gene Deitch, produced by Rembrandt Films
Now that films released to hold on to Tolkien adaptation rights are back in the public consciousness, I'm reminded of this first adaptation of The Hobbit (1966)

“The problem of America continues to bother Tolkien into old age.” Text from a book.
Same, Professor, same. Still bothers me today.

Attend Westmoot. Maybe take a for-credit Tolkien class at Signum University. Perhaps another Tolkien-themed tattoo.

Even now (like this week) the nail still falls off from time to time. It never grew back right and there is sometimes pain. No workers’ comp for the incident. It may be a permanent injury. One of the many reasons I’m no longer teaching in public schools.

In early 2020, I was teaching students with behavior disabilities. One assaulted me. When admin came, the student said I assaulted them. I had scratches on my face, bruises on arm/torso and bone bruise in toe. They had nothing. Admin sent me out on investigation. They faced no consequence.

Less than a week. So very excited. Tolkien via animation (Rankin-Bass Hobbit) was my first exposure to the works of the Professor.

I like to think of myself as a Samwise — loyal, caring, courageous when needed. But I know in my heart that I’m a Denethor II, because, boy, do I like to house some cherry tomatoes in the worst way possible.

That is one key piece of the legendarium that I still haven’t read — now o want to more than ever. And Sara Brown was an amazing instructor for my short-lived attempt at Signum classes.

Great talk. I had to pull out The Fall of Númenor to study that principle in the illustrations of Sauron’s temple and Galadriel passing through Khazad-dûm, which are two of my favorites.
