You can use poker chips to track time of day for hexcrawling systems.

For instance, you can have a stack of red, white, white, red, blue, blue to represent the flow of dawn, day, and night.

I think I first saw this in Hot Springs Island by Jacob Hurst, but it's so clever I've used it ever since.
