However I was at the Queensway on its last working day.
The last film they screened: Return of the Jedi.
Its an absolute sin that nothing has been done with the space since it closed.

Went to see Empire Strikes Back at the Gaumont too. Went in the week after school so it was even more exciting. And I gleefully spolit the ending the next morning on the playground. 😬

The whole sequence, ending with Superman catching the helicopter and the theme crashing in, is just joyous. I'd challenge that no other subsequent superhero film has been able to top it.

This afternoon's viewing: the recent Wes Anderson film.
So essentially every Wes Anderson film.

We were out in Chelmsley Wood. No car so all our cinema visits meant a bus journey into Birmingham. The Gaumont (where I saw Star Wars in 1978), ABC New Street, and Odeon Queensway. Bristol Road was a special treat as it meant two buses!

The very same! We had a choice of Superman, Grease, and something else. Brother, sister and mum chose Grease.
Dad and myself made the correct choice.

One of my favourite memories: seeing this film with my Dad, New Year’s Day 1979, at the ABC Bristol Road, Birmingham.
He still quotes “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?!” now as his favourite line in cinema.

Walked past Christopher Biggins at Birmingham New Street station.
He was leaving.
I was arriving.
