My hunch is he couldโ€™ve been a sailor. Indian sailors or "lascars" were fairly common in British and American ports (Ahab's crew in Moby Dick includes lascars). The US Navy during the war had a relatively high proportion of black sailors(16% of its enlisted)which is how he may have been categorised.
