In the first blog post, Andrea Hammel outlines the conditions under which German-speaking refugees lived and worked in Wales during the Second World War. In the second and third, she focuses on the experiences of two specific sub-groups: artists and children.

My PhD looked at postwar German camps for refugees and expellees, I absolutely loved my archive visits & interviewing eyewitnesses/former residents. My experience as a history student would have been far less rich without the broadening of horizons which languages bring.

I did smatterings of Medieval history - Medieval Europe, intellectuals, C12th unis - during my undergrad having zilch knowledge of Latin, but one of my best memories of my yr abroad was a course based in the archive, looking at orig C15th sources on German witch trials.

Really terrible news from the University of Nottingham. The idea you can have a comprehensive university without language and music is absurd. Higher education serves society and you can't have a society with imagination and purpose if the people in charge decide creativity is worth nothing.

Also means British scholars of the future will be restricted to English language topics & sources, as they just wonβt be able to access so much in the original and research will be much poorer as a resultβ¦.

Absolutely hideous. MFL is now in an ever downward spiral - its course was set when MFL stopped being compulsory at GCSE in 2004, so now is an obvious choice for cuts when HEIs are in the shit. Completely tragic. My History w/ German course (at Bristol) was amazing and fewer will get this chanceβ¦

Quote from Rosie Glaster, "Organisations asked to Get Britain Working should embed employment outcomes across system partners, fund the creation of partnerships and networks to share effective practice, and work to align and build trust on the consistency of service user experience. This will require ongoing investment, not just to establish these systems, but also to adapt and sustain them."
To mark National Employability Day 2025, Rosie Gloster and Jonny Buzzeo consider the government's Get Britian Working plans, and detail the key lessons from previous efforts to improve employment rates which can be used most effectively to inform this initiative: bit.ly/3G1Lhmh
