The Racist Beginnings of School Vouchers | NEA From segregation academies to universal “choice,” the hidden history shaping today's voucher expansion.

Vouchers were first used after Brown v. Board to avoid integrating public schools. Today, they still operate outside the civil rights and accountability standards that guide public education, and a new federal voucher program could divert $50 billion from public schools nationwide.

Special needs units in every secondary school as part of £1bn plan to renovate buildings, Government says | LBC Every secondary school will be expected to have a dedicated Send hub within the coming years

The government's aspirations for SEND units in every secondary school are welcome, but clarity is needed on its plans for primary schools and more funding will still be needed for special school places. Investment in staff and training is also vital.

I was so fortunate to graduate when I did, when loans were first introduced. My 5K debt seems so little now. I don’t think I could afford to go to university today - to start adult working life in so much debt and with so few work opportunities around.

Ministers on lobbying blitz to avoid Labour rebellion over Send changes Government has ‘learned lesson’ of botched welfare overhauls but MPs say they will not back cost-saving measures Ministers have “learned the lesson” of botched welfare changes and are on a sustained lobbying blitz of Labour MPs over an overhaul of special educational needs, Labour MPs told the Guardian, as they said they would not back measures aimed at saving money. The changes will raise the bar at which children in England qualify for an education, health and care plan (EHCP), which legally entitles children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send) to get support. Plans will be reserved for children with the most severe and complex needs, according to sources familiar with the proposals. Continue reading...

‘We’re fighting for the soul of the country’: how Minnesota residents came together to face ICE Networks created after police killed George Floyd were reactivated to challenge Trump’s mass deportation policy Cory never expected he’d spend hours each day driving around after immigration agents, videotaping their moves. The south Minneapolis resident is “not the type of person to do this”, he said. The dangers of what he’s doing, even after the killings of two observers, largely stay out of his mind when he’s watching Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents – even when he’s gotten hit with pepper spray. In quieter moments, it occurs to him that agents likely know where he lives. Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old whom agents killed while he was filming them, “100% could have been me”, Cory said. We also had a non-linear timetable which meant that students did not ‘move’ at the same time. And we had ‘parent consultations’ during one day off timetable with the form tutors who focused on core issues. I was not as tired at the end of the day/week and had time to talk to colleagues and plan.

Fear of ICE is keeping pregnant immigrants in Minnesota from critical care Health care providers in Minnesota said pregnant patients are having more complications linked to stress. But fear of immigration agents is keeping them from prenatal care.

Citing fear of ICE, pregnant immigrants in Minnesota are

-skipping prenatal care
-requesting home births, even when not medically advised
-going w/o adequate food

Many are experiencing complications providers say can be stress-onset: diabetes, high blood pressure, and even water breaking early
