Long COVID: pathophysiological factors and abnormalities of coagulation Acute COVID-19 infection is followed by prolonged symptoms in approximately one in ten cases: known as Long COVID. The disease affects ~65 million individuals worldwide. Many pathophysiological proces...

Having seen a patient yesterday who has been ravaged by COVID19 with multiple complications - just a friendly reminder that we know an awful lot about the pathophysiology. Superb review here;

It’s not rocket πŸš€ science…masking 😷 protects hospitalized patients.

In a study of >640K hosp. admissions at Mass General(2020-24), stopping universal masking/Covid testing was assoc with a 25%⬆️ in hospital-onset resp viral infections; resumption of masking among staff was #MedSky #BlueSky πŸ§ͺ #IDSky

Long Covid remains a concern
Baker also said the report had not touched on Long Covid as much as it could have - and it was an ongoing problem that would need to be dealt with.

"I think this would be possibly one area where this report was quite light on recommendations, and that was how we manage an ongoing threat like Long Covid.

"We can look at the cost of Long Covid to New Zealand in economic terms is estimated at about $2 billion a year in lost productivity, but even worse than that it's the misery and loss of wellbeing, and people having to give up work.

"It's quite a devastating chronic illness."

Reducing infection rates through masking and other infectious controls would help keep Long Covid cases down, he said.

Keeping immunity high through booster vaccines had also been shown to decrease the chances of getting Long Covid, he said, but Long Covid had been a major focus of Australia's report and needed more attention in New Zealand.

"Certainly, we do need a national strategy. At the moment, it seems to be a strategy of ignoring it, and I just don't think that's acceptable.

I cannot believe in 2024 we are need to defend basic health interventions that have lowered infant & maternal mortality and increased overall human lifespan and health.

βœ…οΈAbortion is healthcare

as I’m receiving more and more requests of help, I’m sharing a last one bearing several take home messages:
1-you can still develop severe #longcovid if infected in 2024
2-you can have it if you are healthy young person
3- even if you’re a med student
4- your life can be destroyed or stopped

Covid Can Raise the Risk of Heart Problems for Years People who had severe infections are especially vulnerable.

For years, some of us have fought back against terrible misinformation that somehow attributed Covid vaccines to a big risk of heart problems.

It’s always been Covid infection, not the Covid vaccine.

Yet another study revealing the truth:

But did you know that in addition to many physical symptoms, iron deficiency is associated with multiple mental health issues?

Chronic diseases:

Cardiovascular disease
Autoimmune diseases
Diabetes
Dementia

All very likely linked to infection with SARS-CoV-2.

If you want to tackle chronic disease, part of your strategy has to include tackling SARS-CoV-2.

Surge in worldwide measles cases driven by lack of vaccine coverage, WHO says The WHO and CDC say there were about 10.3 million cases of measles last year, up 20 percent from 2022. Children are especially susceptible to complications.

10.3 million cases of measles occurred worldwide last year, up 20% from 2022, primarily because of inadequate immunization coverage.
The disease resulted in 107,500 deaths last year, mostly killing children under 5!!!!
There are no upsides to shunning vaccines.

The fact hardly anyone understands they have long covid but so many feel generally unwell, fatigued and are repeatedly unwell. People think they know nobody with long covid when it’s just not understood/acknowledged.

It’s hard to know the right thing to do sometimes. UK are hardly offering covid vaccines- I got one as frontline health. Husband and 3 teens getting them tomorrow privately. Was waiting for novavax but apparently not coming despite being approved so taking the plunge in readiness for winter.
