This was recommended to me recently in response to my feeling that the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives was a little disappointing (and not very Mormon).

People have worn out "performative." We often perform things that are real, you know. Posting is a kind of performance of one's politics. Performative doesn't actually mean "fake" or "empty," it just gets deployed that way. We actually need performance. Case in point: last night's performance.

When students complain about the amount of reading I wish I could convey to them just how much the assigned reading is only the tip of a very cool iceberg. Having a "suggested reading" portion of the syllabus for the students who get really into it is nice for that reason, imo.

She's not wrong. Time has ceased to mean anything.

Organizing in the real world with real, flawed people is messy and if I were to give any advice it would be that sometimes it's better to complain to your real life friends (who are not directly involved) rather than process emotions online.

True that all of us are targets, but we don't need to have an all-or-nothing approach. It's still worth mitigating risk even if you can't eliminate it.

The strategy of masking isn't unique to left wing organizing though. The Klan famously masks their identities.

I think we're probably past the point winning the narrative by presenting ourselves as empathizable figures. Might as well reduce risk of being targeted for retribution where possible.
