U.S. and international leaders who truly seek peace must give Palestinians a say in their own future, not rubber-stamp a stopgap plan that enables the Israeli government to prolong the suffering and violence in Gaza.

And Trump’s plan for U.S. administration of Gaza and an “International Stabilization Force” in Gaza — which, to date, no partner country has been willing to join — risks pulling U.S. troops into a more direct role occupying Gaza.

Yesterday’s vote should not be mistaken for an end to the genocide or an excuse for U.S. officials and lawmakers to turn their backs on Gaza. Right now, the Israeli government is continuing its deadly strikes, while continuing to deprive Gaza of live-saving food, medicine, and shelter

We are disappointed that the U.N. Security Council has approved a slipshod Gaza “peace plan” that ignores the aspirations of people in Gaza — and is all but doomed to collapse.

A defense pact with Saudi Arabia won’t make people in the United States or the Middle East any safer. But it will send another distressing signal to authoritarians everywhere that the U.S. government doesn’t care about human rights or accountability.

Trump doesn’t deserve all the credit, though. The Biden administration also spent at least a year angling for a U.S.-Saudi defense treaty in an ill-conceived attempt to bury regional opposition to the Israeli government’s occupation of Palestine.

We already know what happens when MBS enjoys no-strings-attached Pentagon backing: Impunity, suffering, and industrial-scale human rights abuses.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s corrupt, cozy ties with Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner include billion-dollar deals and making him a business partner of the Saudi public investment fund. The payoff? A defense pact with the U.S.

After sending U.S. troops to occupy U.S. cities and murder people in the Caribbean, Trump now plans to sign them up to fight and die for a despot who waged a brutal war in Yemen and funneled billions to Trump’s friends and family.

Our recommendations to Congress last spring have only grown more urgent: Defend and assert Congress’ war powers, conduct aggressive oversight over the DoD and CIA, stand up for civil liberties, and don’t let this administration drag us into a destructive war in Mexico.

As the exercise unfolded, Trump's “war on cartels” spread violence throughout Mexico, harmed U.S. industries reliant on cross-border trade, hamstrung cooperation with the Mexican government, and became a pretense to further crack down on civil liberties at home.

We found that U.S. strikes would have a profoundly destabilizing effect in Mexico and the U.S., while failing to reduce the amount of dangerous drugs reaching our communities.

New reporting indicates that Trump is once again planning military strikes in Mexico to “combat drug cartels.” The truth is, U.S. strikes on Mexican cartels will only create human suffering and chaos. We know because we ran a tabletop exercise of this exact scenario.

A bare majority of Senators, out of cowardice, indifference, or both, endorsed murder by presidential decree.
