As a reminder, when you get script notes from me, it's not from an intern, a junior analyst, or someone whoโs โbreaking intoโ the industry. With me, youโre working with someone whoโs lived and breathed development for over two decades.

I wanted to thank everyone for a great first month of The Development Track. I have heard from people all over the world and have given script notes to some really stellar writers. My slots are filling up fast, and I'll only be offering my introductory prices for another month. #sciptsky

How To Sell Your Feature Spec In 2025 โ The Development Track
Another big feature spec sale from a new writer! 2nd comedy sale this month. Just finished reading it and can definitely see why it sold. Very very funny. It also followed many of my rules for selling a spec outlined below!

Last week, Amazon fired their head of content, Jen Salke. While the media has obsessed over that decision, I argue that there is another streamer that has a much worse track record. What's surprising is that it is run by the person who might take over Disney

It feels like there are only five places to sell a show, where in 2017 I would sometimes take a pitch to 13 places.

Production really hasnโt recovered since COVID sadly, but yes, most streamers started carying more about profitability than subscribers, which means less shows. The real tragedy is that the pivot made the scripted cable business go away or become more niche.

A lot has been written about #AppleTV lately, especially as reports leaked that it loses a billion a year. I have a lot of thoughts and solutions for the streamer. While I don't think the service is going anywhere, there are a lot of ways for it to improve!

Sadly my Adolescence in comedy joke was ruined by it being a limited series, although I am sure many will still attempt the joke! I am kind of excited for realish movies to finally compete in TV movie category, only cause I loved Rebel Ridge, although Netflix still wonky on what is eligible.

Any new category fraud happening this year?! I feel like no and it will just be a normal year of mostly the same shows, a few new comedy noms, and White Lotus taking up 90 percent of supporting noms, being happy for Walt Goggins winning and pretending itโs for Gemstones, The Shield or Justified.

So itโs usually best to see if there is interest in development for a new pilot before it is used for staffing. But I get it, sometimes you just need a staffing sample or its perfect to get a job for your dream show. A good rep will find a work around.
01.04.2025 22:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
Personally, I think every pilot you write you should write to sell, cause why not! But it can be hard to balance. Producers usually donโt want to develop something that has been exposed to networks or studios for staffing.
01.04.2025 22:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Know what type of projects have been selling, know whatโs been working, make sure your show doesnโt exist. You can have mandates in mind you have heard from reps and producers, but usually those mandates fill up quickly or change without notice.

A pilot for a show you want to sell is different. It has to be a great script, but also have the bones for a series. Have a few buyers in mind that you think the script is a good fit for before you start writing. Study the marketplace. Ideally it is a series that has multiple networks to take it to.

The good thing is that a staffing sample can be used for years. I still recommend changing every few years, but last show I staffed a few writers who it was obvious the sample was 5 or 6 years old.

Be bold, memorable, take chances, but also adhere to the genre templates. And don't forget great characters. Logline still matters, because most of the time that is what draws the reader from choosing to read yours from a long list, unless you have been recommended by someone whose taste they trust.
01.04.2025 22:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
A great staffing sample needs to accomplish a lot. It should be ideally for the genre of show you want to staff on. It needs to stand out from hundreds of submissions that the producers, studio, and network execs, showrunners are reading.
01.04.2025 22:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
There are really only two types of pilots that TV writers writer, a staffing/OWA sample or a pilot they think can sell. This doesnโt mean they canโt be the same, the first pilot I worked on that got made was a pilot I read while staffing a separate series.

Such an unexpected and brilliant show. I really hope streamers and networks take lessons from its success. Honestly, reminded me of yours shows, taking familiar genres and innovating them in ways that feel fresh and exciting.

Let me know your thoughts and any ideas for other script to screen comparisons. It's always fascinating to see how much scripts change, even after a series is greenlit.

A lot happens to a pilot script from the first draft submitted to the network to the time it airs on television. In the first in a series, I compare an early draft of Netflix's Zero Day to the final product to give an insight into the note giving process.

I am not as familiar with the publishing world. I do think getting published is helpful and then your agent will be to help sell film/tv rights. Most of my experience with books is from agents sending me what property theyโre out to producers with. But unpublished books do sometimes find producers.

While I agree that it is hard to predict what the studios want to buy, I definitely think there are ways to best position your project and get studios to actually pay attention and be excited to read your project. #filmsky #scriptsky

While most of my exec experience has been in TV, I have sold 15 films in my career and helped get 4 made. I have a lot of thoughts about the spec market and think we will continue to see studios buying lots of specs in 2025!
