Gov. Pritzker: β€œIt's wrong to deploy the National Guard and active duty Marines into an American city over the objection of local law enforcement, just to inflame a situation and create a crisis.”

🧡 One of the biggest myths in education since I started teaching in 2010 is this:

The knowledge-rich curriculum

The myth is that knowing more will improve the quality of children's lives.

It's built on the lie that knowledge = grades = good job = happiness.

It's a lie.

They’re not mutually exclusive

Interesting, thanks, I’ll read it properly tomorrow.

With 1 in 8 young people NEET something clearly isn’t working. And the number one barrier young people give for struggling to gain employment - a lack of work experience.

And yet, many many young people still leave education ill-prepared, without the confidence to speak with strangers, work well with others, manage their time or deal with knock-backs.

And these skills can’t be learnt through didactic lessons. Experience, reflection & guidance will, integrated throughout the curriculum.

Are you suggesting there’s no such thing as transferable skills? If I learn how to prioritise, or work well in a team, or confidently communicate in one setting then I’m likely to be able to in another.

I agree, that seems pretty ridiculous. I’m certainly not advocating lessons on resilience, time-keeping, etc. but building in an awareness that we need to practice and develop these skills is useful, creating space to reflect and improve.

Yes they do and long may it continue, and be recognised as being as important (if not more) as academic and knowledge based learning.

Yes, that is quite true, although I’d add the change from meeting deadlines and being on time because of external forces (i.e. punitive) to seeing it as a personal & professional responsibility, understanding that others rely on me and me and on them, is not insignificant.

Basic ability & confidence to speak with different people in different settings, being able to organise, prioritise and plan.

Yes, a time-keeping lesson would be boring. People learn the importance of managing their own time through experiential learning, reflection, guidance. WEX is ideal for this

Clearly employers should be training on technical skills but should we really expect employers to train their young workforce in universal work readiness & employability skills? And even if employers were willing, the quality of that training would be so unreliable & variable beyond compare.

Lack of work experience is consistently the number one reason young people give as a barrier to employment. A positive high-quality work experience can be life changing for many who would not otherwise have these opportunities.

And that’s to say nothing about building career confidence, developing self-efficacy, ensuring labour market knowledge, broadening horizons & raising aspirations. All vital for yp to succeed in their next steps, and often only available to those with access to social capital & positive role models.

Lots of agreement on BlueSky on this, but I just can’t. There are clearly common work skills we all need, no matter our profession. School should help develop communication, team work, leadership, project planning, time keeping & basic work readiness, inc. emailing, interview skills, presenting, etc

Good to be at the launch of this important report from @impetus.org.uk. β€˜Compound disadvantage’ is an interesting phrase, referring to the stacking up of different challenges young people face in transitioning into work.

At least you can relax in the knowledge that β€˜Bucking Fastard’ is a really awful name and that Kate and Rooney Mara aren’t even twins, let alone identical.

Are Muslims really banning dogs in parks? πŸ€”

These figures are very sobering. The starkest ones are Β£119k pa for each young people in a YOI & 34% of 10-17 year olds reoffending.

Just imagine if we took even half of that money & invested it in the young people’s training, support & employment. We’d save £££s AND massively reduce re-offending.

Young people who are NEET – what does the data tell us?

What better way to start your weekend than listening to me talk about youth unemployment (half a million young people not in education, employment or training say they’ve never had a paid job) - tune in at 11.15 on Radio Five Live. learningandwork.org.uk/resources/re...
