President Trump is demanding Texas legislators to redraw congressional maps mid-decade to secure five more seats by racially splitting districts to weaken their voting ability. This is a gross misuse of power, and we must not remain silent.

Republicans have either forgotten or are ignoring the foundational principles of our country—government by the people and for the people. Redistricting after each census ensures fair and equal representation.

Every moment spent on partisan redistricting delays real help for flood victims. Governor Abbott must fulfill his duty to all Texans and remove all topics except flood relief and recovery from the special session call.

Over a hundred family members are still unaccounted for from the Fourth of July flood. Instead of prioritizing flood recovery and future prevention, Republican leaders are focusing their energy on supporting Trump's power grab.

Today marks 10 years of marriage equality. A significant milestone in civil rights, and one we look forward to building on in the years ahead. But that progress is under threat, as Republican leaders continue pushing efforts to roll back these hard-won protections. Equality isn’t negotiable.

Forcing one specific religious text into classrooms is not education, it’s indoctrination. It violates the US Constitution which forbids the government from using tax dollars to promote a religion. Public schools are for all children, regardless of faith or background.

Our Founding Fathers experienced first hand what it was like to live in a country with no religious liberty. In England the king was head of the state church and there was no religious freedom. Our founders fought to ensure religious freedom for us today.

If Republicans’ goal was for Texas children to engage in American history, they’d fully fund our schools, give students opportunities to participate in civic activities, and encourage them to vote. They would not violate the separation of church and state adopted by the Founding Fathers.

The Ten Commandments will now be required in every public school classroom under a new law passed by Republican lawmakers. Supporters claim this is about teaching children the history of our state and nation, but the irony is stunning.

Your efforts help ensure our community has safe, beautiful, and accessible green spaces for families, kids, and neighbors to enjoy for generations to come.

These zoning changes aren’t just real estate projects, they’re decisions that affect air quality, traffic, safety, and the overall character of a community, which in fact can make an area less suitable for housing.

What it does is weaken the community’s voice and make it significantly harder for residents to push back against harm to their neighborhoods, whether that’s a factory, a landfill, or other industrial uses.

The author of HB 24 argues that this bill is about expanding access to affordable housing by limiting public protest of zoning changes. But in reality, this bill doesn’t guarantee a single unit of affordable housing.

Texas AFT has been supporting and fighting to strengthen public education in Texas since 1916 by advocating for policies that increase funding for our schools and protect our classrooms from budget cuts and privatization of public education through vouchers.

This gave Senate Democrats the numbers they needed to stop HB 796 and other harmful Republican bills.

I successfully called a point of order, & HB 796 was sent back to the Committee on State Affairs for revision. After being delayed, the bill died in the Senate when Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick enforced a procedural move that triggered a 4/5 vote.

HB 796 sought to overstep the foundational principles of our Constitution by establishing the Joint Legislative Committee on Constitutional Enforcement, a committee with the power to declare federal legislation unconstitutional without the judicial process.

Putting a Christian and Jewish version of religion on the walls of schools paid for by everyone, including non-Christians and non-Jews, is unfair and un-American.

The Senate also reduced teacher raises by punishing teachers in larger districts, giving them half as much as those in smaller ones. By passing vouchers first, the House gave up its leverage to negotiate. Our schools, teachers, and students are now paying the price.

slashing it from $395 to a mere $55, while boosting charter facility funding from $189 million to $255 million. Charter schools already face far less oversight allowing some to use public funds to buy condos, hotels, and grant extravagant bonuses to their superintendent.
