The new commercial ad from Bild (the German, right-leaning press) has the slogan “Kauf kein kack” on it. Yes, “KKK”.

They just don’t even care to pretend anymore.

"I am not your spectacle." Strong words from my colleague on why asking BIPOC to explain their heritage or their experiences is racist.

They don't. Not even if they're published. Reading the first paper one publishes is a whole experience. One never understands how it actually got published XD

Australian academics refuse to attend US conferences for fear of being detained ‘When academics fear travelling or partnering with US institutions, the impacts ripple through the entire global knowledge ecosystem,’ one says

There are great conferences and science in the US, but with the way things are right now, it’s too risky to attend.

“Soft” skills are not soft at all. They’re probably among the most important ones. It doesn’t matter how many titles you have or how smart you are, if don’t know how to communicate.

Grad schools should emphasize on said skills more.

💥 Costco, Apple and John Deere shareholders have rejected anti-DEI proposals brought by nonprofit National Center for Public Policy Research.

In yesterday's shareholders meeting at Apple and today at Deere, director from the NCPPR said, 'DEI is out, merit is in.'

Shareholders: DEI is in.

“Houston, we have a narrative” by Randy Olson is a great book on storytelling and narrative (for the sciences). It also gives some rules and tricks on how to tell a story.

Dear supervisors. Please remember that one of the worst damages you can do to your (PhD) students is writing their manuscript for them. Academia and Industry need professionals able to communicate and convey ideas clearly and effectively. Don’t hinder your mentee’s future. 😊

I don’t know if it is something at all, but do we talk about the social pressure we introverts experience when people ask about “your plans” or give you condescendence when you didn’t do anything on the weekend?
Sometimes we just appreciate and enjoy staying in. 😬

Disentangling the effects of structure and lone-pair electrons in the lattice dynamics of halide perovskites - Nature Communications By comparing CsSrBr3 and CsPbBr3 with close structural similarity but the latter lacking lone-pair electrons on the octahedral metal, the authors reveal the similar vibrational anharmonicities in the ...

Vibrational anharmonicity enables great optoelectronics in halide #perovskites. But that’s not the whole story: it must couple with appropriate chemical bonding. This is essential for compositional design. Have a look ⬇️

Doing research in industry is kind of fun: Interesting (and real-life problems) topics, clear rules about overtime, less (racial/gender/socioeconomic/political) bias (🙊) and yes, more money.

A pleasant surprise.

In this episode of “German bureaucracy”:

I have to report (and get approved) a leave of absence to the work agency, but I can only do it 7 days in advance or it will be automatically denied. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why can’t I do it earlier? Wasn’t “Planung” supposed to be “Halb des Lebens”?
