Law Commission calls for new definition of a "disabled child" The Law Commission is calling for a new definition of "disability" for disabled children, one of 40 recommendations.

The Law Commission says it’s time to update the outdated & ableist definition of β€œdisabled child” in the Children Act 1989.

They recommend using the Equality Act definition (with extensions) to simplify the law & make social care fairer

@charlotte2153.bsky.social β€” Warrington needs politics that listens. #YourParty is built by ordinary people, not donors. We’re organising for dignity, housing, and public services that work.

Don’t remove the legal rights of children with SEND The SEND system is in need of reform but restricting children’s access to support through EHCPs isn’t the answer, warns IPSEA’s Catriona Moore

A packed Westminster Hall debate is getting underway into a petition signed by more than 120,000 people calling on the government to "retain legal right to assessment and support in education for children with SEND". www.tes.com/magazine/ana...

Absolutely incredible (but predictable) that Reform couldn’t be bothered to attend the #SEND debate in Westminster today.

So many MP’s have pointed to their absence and also that they should apologise for their comments about β€˜parents hijacking and gaming the system’.

Shame on Reform.

Georgia Gould gives no real answers as to what the #SEND reforms will look like.

Not good enough.

Families shouldn’t have to fight for years to access basic rights. We need Statutory enforcement, Multi-agency accountability , Public funding, not private contracts Lived experience at the table. Rebuild SEND on justice, care, & public ownership. #SENDCrisis #EHCPReform #SENDsky

@charlotte2153.bsky.social My child went from thriving in primary to failing GCSEs because the EHCP system delayed denied and diluted support. No mental health input. No joined-up planning. Years of fighting alone. This is what a broken SEND system looks like, IT MUST CHANGE #sendjustice #SENDsky

My child’s EHCP was issued without updated health or PfA input. No support for anxiety, mobility, or transition.
Delays. Vague provision. No accountability. This isn’t a one-off. It’s systemic. We need public SEND services, not patchwork fixes.

@janeharrislondon.bsky.social was on Sky News this morning representing @dcpcampaign.bsky.social ahead of the SEND rally today!

Reform is desperately needed so that children with SEND and their families don’t have to fight for the ordinary things in life.

Michael Charles of Sinclairs Law isn’t on here but this is his critical appraising the Children and Wellbeing Bill. Please share for awareness! There are some positives in the Bill but it also holds the potential to harm a lot of children:

Chart showing the proportion of families on Universal Credit with housing costs not fully covered by Local Housing Allowance: GB.
The current situation means that nearly half (48 per cent) of privately renting families on Universal Credit do not have their housing costs fully covered by LHA. Figure 3 shows that when LHA was re-pegged to the 30th percentile of local rents in April 2024, four years after being frozen, the share of families on Universal Credit with housing costs not fully covered by LHA fell from 67 per cent in March 2024 to 45 per cent in May 2024, a fall of over 325,000 households. But these numbers are growing now that LHA is frozen again, with couples without children the group most likely not to have their rent fully covered by LHA.

Since 2013, private rents in Great Britain have increased by 54 per cent, but Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates have increased by just 36 per cent.

Nearly half of privately renting families on Universal Credit are facing shortfalls between their rent and Local Housing Allowance.
