I didn't know anything about the high concept behind this tour until we hit the road. H called it Gerard's world of make-believe and Gerard himself later referred to it as "some bullshit I made up." I love it when he makes up bullshit and the idea of a dictatorial country and commentary on the demands it makes of artists and the dangers of cooperating is a genuinely good one. It was so successful1! The perversion of the Black Parade from a literal embodiment of death carrying out the task of shepherding the dead to the afterlife into a tool used to further state violence! I loved it. I didn't even realize how much Gerard was acting the part until he started getting smiley towards the end of the album part of the set. And then goshhhhh they SO HAPPY. It was pouring out of them in the second set. The moon was gorgeous and full and they had a great view of it from the stage, and at one point G got distracted by it. Cute. The mayor of Belleville presented them the keys to the city and in return they gave him a sheaf of wheat and a wrapped up fish "from Draag." You can't make that shit up. It was very liberating to have one of the Draag rules be that you can only sing when you're unsure of the lyrics, although unfortunately I know almost every word of Black Parade and still sang nonstop. Call me WANTED I guess. Like all of their shows, it was that transcendent communal experience that left me both wrung out and full. E and I were talking about how polite everyone was getting out of the parking lot. At most venues in the DC area, getting out is a nightmare - everyone is cranky and rushing for the exit and you will be cut off unless you risk imminent collision or happen, after a dozen cars, upon someone willing to let you through. I don't think this is due to better manners of New Jersey folks but the way that show made you feel like part of a community.

Critiquing Gerard's conceptual art has always seemed so beside the point to me but unfortunatelyyyyyy I have to do it this time. I think the imagery they used for Draag was not it. When I first learned they were doing a dictatorship story I was like, oh, a timely commentary on the state of our country! And I think it still is a valid commentary but the Soviet imagery (mostly the fucking sheafs of wheat, and the Eastern European accent and the vaguely Greek/Cyrillic-inspired script) distanced the commentary from the here and made it much less effective. The enemies of the state all being white, too. Or maybe it's me making it all out to be a lot more deliberate than what Gerard really intended.

My thoughts on last night's magical show. It's always amazing to see them play Jersey. Warning: the second screenshot is a MILD CRITIQUE, just be glad I'm not wanking about it on tumblr.
