Love Isaac Chotiner; agree with him more or less always; definitely on his side in this Ben Smith/Semafor squabble.

Also want to gently suggest that the intensity of the Chotiner hero-worship on my timeline is getting weird & embarrassing. Maybe chill?

Great find. Brief item in the Chicago Defender (5/8/20) suggests that a.) Carpenter may have barnstormed AME churches w/this sermonโ€”or at very least delivered it more than once, i.e. in Chicago as well as Philly; and b.) the subject of the sermon was exactly what its title suggests.

Grumps Blame It for Everything From the Rise of Taylor to the Fall of Pitchfork. They Donโ€™t Even Understand It. Criticismโ€™s most abused straw man.

It's here:

Love Wesley & K but suggest you read Carl Wilsonโ€™s (lengthy but worth it) recent Slate piece, a quasi-rejoinder to K that delves into structural Qs K glides over. Carlโ€™s essay is nominally about the (esoteric) โ€œpoptimism warsโ€โ€”but itโ€™s really a great cover-the-waterfront overview of 21c pop crit

Great points. The Democrats focus grouped empty platitudes and technocratic talking points couldn't be further from what voters respond to in this modern media environment.

Surge in antisemitism investigations at US universities after October 7 attacks, data shows A report shared exclusively with the Guardian documents how a civil rights law has become a tool to impose ideological priorities on US schools

"Only one of 102 antisemitism complaints the authors reviewed raises antisemitism claims unrelated to criticism of Israel... The surge in complaints has been in part the work of a small group of pro-Israel actors" @alicesperi.bsky.social

So struck by the case Mamdani's triumph makes for the value of Africana/post-colonial studies. His moral vision & approach to politics clearly shaped by both lived experience as an African/S. Asian immigrant & by a theory of that experienceโ€”ideas central to his parents' work too ofc. Education, man

Should have been said for months.

I think Dick Cheneyโ€™s death today highlighted this divide.

The Democrats who still say shit like โ€œreach across the aisleโ€ and praise evil people are playing to a political audience that no longer exists.

Mamdani wasnโ€™t cruel to Cuomo in a Trumpism style, but he didnโ€™t concede anything either.

Jokes aside, I have no patience for these clowns or those who indulge their bogeyman fears. NYC isnโ€™t unsafe for Jews. Itโ€™s modestly less amenable to those whose sense of well-being is based on denying Palestiniansโ€™ humanity & who wish to glide thru life w/out hearing a different opinion on the subj

Zohran Mamdani says on NY1 he didn't get a congratulatory call from either Andrew Cuomo or Eric Adams last night.

He says he got a congratulatory call from Curtis Sliwa, though.

Zohran Mamdani was the first mayoral candidate and Democratic official to stand up to the Trump administration over the arrest and disappearance of Mahmoud Khalil, which he saw as a violation of the First Amendment.
