The same baby harvestman on the same wood, this time, with a ruler beside it, showing that it is probably just about one millimetre in length, maybe less.

Well, today, I rechecked the vivarium and spotted that the egg had hatched. It took me ages to find the juvenile as it is so tiny (~1mm) and well-camouflaged. I also found two more!

Raising 'harvestkids' is very tough; I'd love to bring them to adulthood. Please send me your best wishes! ๐Ÿคž

Microscope photograph in side view of a brilliant metallic blue wasp in the genus Chrysis with black wings, dead and pinned through the thorax. The photo shows tremendous detail of the fine hairs and pits on the insect's body.

Some of what I do as an entomology curator is Chrysis management.

Some people might say I am obsessed with harvestmen. But I don't know what they're talking about.

Dicranopalpus ramosus
Platybunus pinetorum
Nemastoma bimaculatum
Megabunus diadema

An orchid with subdued colours but no less impressive - the petals open up almost like the mouth of the fictional alien from the movie franchise Predator. The flower is illuminated, with the background darkened.

It's stunning! I would love to explore some of the families we don't get over this way, there's some incredible species - some that fluoresce like scorpions too!
