Owen Schalk is the author of Canada in Afghanistan: A story of military, diplomatic, political and media failure, 2003-2023 (Lorimer Books, 2023) and the co-author with Yves Engler of Canada's Long Fight Against Democracy (Baraka Books, 2024).

Schalk thus makes a compelling argument that NATO is driven by capitalist expansion, not peacekeeping or peacemaking, and that Canadians should oppose NATO and support their government's withdrawal from the devastating alliance.

5 central points: 1) NATO has always been an offensive alliance 2) the wars it wages are not just 3) its existence/expansion starkly raises the risk of world war 4) it undermines Canadian sovereignty 5) it diverts resources that can serve social & environmental needs to a US-owned arms industry

Schalk's accessibly written book disrupts the popular perception of NATO in the West-that it is a defensive and benign collective security organization-and explores why this perception is a myth.

A founding member of NATO, Canada has contributed to this global militarization by increasing its military spending massively since the end of the Cold War, and capitulating to US pressure to commit an unprecedented proportion of its own GDP to militarization and war.

Building from the backdrop of global tensions and wars, including conflicts that have been stoked and intensified by the US and its allies, global military spending has reached record levels ($2.44 trillion in 2024), driven mostly by the same players: the US-driven NATO alliance.
