I’m not going to wallow in self-pity forever but I get to today. That’s the rules

Dry Drinking Portland’s Booze-Free Brands Break Through

First up: this piece from Hannah Wallace profiling three entrepreneurs in the growing nonalcoholic beverage space: oregonbusiness.com/dry-drinking/

For the last week or so a crew has been slowly (but loudly) hacking away at a tree on my block. Half an hour ago it finally hit the ground and it hit so hard it made my apartment building shake. Feels a bit on the nose

I’m bad at promoting my work on here but I’m going to share several stories from myself and my team over the next week. In the meantime, if you hear about anything, hit me up

anyway, I’m out of a job as of Oct. 17. it’s not my first layoff but it’s a particular gut punch because it affects several other talented and entirely undeserving colleagues, and because I have been so incredibly proud of the work we’ve done over the last four years and change

once me and some friends were wasted at perkins on halloween and saw an old man angrily approach a couple doing a zombie hitler and eva braun costume to say β€œAdolf wasn’t smiling when I pulled the trigger in Berlin” which, aside from being a cool thing to say, has also always made me kind of wonder

BrenΓ© Brown does draw a distinction between what she calls embarrassment (I feel bad because I did something bad) and shame (I feel bad because I am bad) and says the former is useful and the latter is not. I can’t tell if this post acknowledges that (it’s paywalled) but I personally find it useful

And what's wrong with that?"

75 years ago today, The first Peanuts comic strip was published. Peppermint Patty was such a brilliant character, and this is my favourite strip featuring her, from 28th December 1984.

the extwitter mindset is ultimately about a contempt for knowledge. it was never about "science vs humanities." it is about the idea that it is worthwhile to understand the different facets of a complex system even if you cannot provide an immediately instrumental justification for doing so

Short thread about the necessity of not only remembering the past but describing it to people who weren't there to experience it. Just as younger generations condescend to older ones, older generations can lack patience and empathy when dealing with younger folks who don't know everything they know.

Like many GenXers, the whole "cultural marxism"/"woke mind virus" bullshit we're currently living through just feels like a Groundhog Day replay of the "political correctness" bullshit we lived through 30 years ago. bsky.app/profile/seth...

It really seems like the core project of the whole tech industry right now is devaluing (and monetizing the devaluation of) everything that makes us human, including the experiences of love and grief

It’s been years since I’ve been out late enough for it to matter, but in 2000s Portland if you happened to be out after 12:30 (when most buses stopped running) on a weekend night you could literally wait for hours for a cab, and that’s if your call got through in the first place

This is literally what the actual "siege" of the auxiliary ICE building looks like

As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway
