Board briefed on Climate Justice Plan update following public comment period On Sept. 18, County staff and community partners updated the Board of County Commissioners on the next steps of the County’s first-ever Climate Justice Plan.

SCIENTISTS LINK FOSSIL FUEL EMISSIONS AND INCREASE IN HEAT WAVE EVENTS A new study¹ links over 200 heat waves to human-caused climate change and fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions. The study found that 213 recent heat waves (including the PNW 2021 heat dome) were more likely and intense due to fossil fuel producers. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported almost 500,000 annual heat deaths between 2000-2019 ². An increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events will only add to the devastating impacts these events have on public health and our communities. Despite the growing body of research linking fossil fuel emissions to extreme weather events, the EPA recently proposed to repeal greenhouse gas emission standards³, essentially deregulating fossil fuel emissions that cause climate change. We recently submitted a letter to the EPA in stark opposition to this proposal.
