In Alberta. Can’t stop hoping. Late autistic. Chronically ill. Queer. Mother. Daughter. Friend. I’m new to social media, although admittedly I’ve been a lurker (all my anxiety would allow), please be gentle, I love these spaces.

Solidarity with students all over #Alberta today who are walking out of school in support of their teachers & public education.

These young folks are leading the way. Labour unions & folks against the authoritarian use of power to shut down our rights should follow.

Graphic of the education minister Demetrios Nicolaides with the word “resign” in capital letters behind & in front of him.

Nicolaides stood by while the #UCP silenced teachers, forcing them back to overcrowded classrooms w/ no support, no solutions, & no respect. He's failed teachers, students, & families.

It's time for him to resign.

To whom it may concern
We are the Alberta Students' Association (ASA), a group of high school students from across the province who have come together to make our voices heard on issues that affect us. While we have only recently formed, our goal is to represent students from different schools and communities in Alberta, sharing our perspectives and organizing events that matter to us.
We wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves and explain why we have come together. Over the past few days, students across Alberta have been discussing concerns that affect our schools and our learning experiences. Out of these discussions, the idea of a coordinated walkout emerged as a way for students to express themselves safely, responsibly, and collectively
Our association is still growing, and our focus is on connecting students, sharing our experiences, and standing together as a community. We want students and parents to know that we value open communication, safety, and respect, and that any actions we organize are meant to be peaceful and constructive.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about the Alberta Students' Association. We look forward to continuing to build a supportive and connected student community across Alberta.
Sincerely,
Alberta Students' Association

By invoking the #NotWithStanding clause to force the employers contract on teachers and shut down all legal review of their cision, Alberta has just veered off the cliff into full-on authoritarianism, stripping workers of fundamental rights.

Is Premier Smith and the Alberta government enacting the Notwithstanding Clause as a democratic backstop to a controversial judicial ruling? - No.
Then it is clearly using it to ride roughshod over Albertan's Rights.
The use of the Notwithstanding Clause in this regard is deeply concerning.

You know what would let kids have more sleep? A society that didn't have "standard" 9-5 work hours, so schools didn't have to act as de facto babysitters during those hours, so kids could get a lie in and start school at lunchtime. Especially neurodivergent kids with delayed sleep phases.

Canada needs to curb corporate greed and break up grocery monopolies

‘Extremely graphic’ sexual content found in books at K-9 schools, province says Books found in some school libraries in Calgary and Edmonton had “explicit sexual content,” said the provincial government.

Let's be clear: three of the four books flagged by the Alberta government today as containing "inappropriate content" feature queer and trans people.

This is moral panic.

This is the same blueprint of book bans in the US.

And this is happening in Canada.

I believe EM.

I believe Hockey Canada paid her a settlement because they also believed her.

I think hockey is just a sport that is neutral at best, but that we have created a culture of entitlement where players are raised to believe they are invincible.

I believe the complicity runs deep.
