Infographic describing how to recruit fathers in research -- successful practices recommended by researchers specializing in fatherhood. The Recruitment strategies include team composition (ensuring presence of men, ethnocultural representation, and heavy training), recruitment locations and methods (prioritizing direct community-based approaches to recruit fathers where they are and building trusting relationships with community partners), specifically targeting fathers (using the word "dad" or "father" in recruitment materials instead of parent, using visuals featuring fathers), and being flexible (adapting data collection schedules and using technology to meet fathers where they are). Retention strategies include building a trusting relationship with fathers and maintaining contact between waves of the study

This project was a labor of love and I am so excited that it's finally out! Conducting research with fathers may take some creativity and new tactics, but it can be done.

Pushed my student to ask for feedback on her predoc fellowship application from a program officer (PO) at NIH. This used to be a near-necessity; they would tell students about recent rule changes that might affect them, for example.

PO responded w/a form email that they can't give feedback. Yikes.

Seems like a good time to bump this excellent piece written by (at the time) trainees. Highlights many longstanding issues with the internship model as well as insights gleaned from new challenges encountered during the pandemic.

Hundreds of research grants at Columbia canceled following Trump edict, administrator says The National Institutes of Health is terminating 232 grants for scientific research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, according to an email an administrator sent to faculty.

I received one of the 232 NIH grant "terminations" sent to scientists at Columbia last night. My research focuses on improving maternal and child health in the US. Also affected: ongoing clinical trials, research training programs, and research centers that aim to improve the health of Americans.

Let me be very clear. Jews are being used to justify the destruction of higher education. We need to stand up and openly oppose these actions, no matter our feelings about the campus protests.

The Trump administration illegally arrested and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident and recent graduate of Columbia University, in direct retaliation for his advocacy. The government must immediately release him from custody.

I have confirmation from several sources now that all T32s, many F30s and F31s, and most or all Center awards (P30, P50) have been terminated at Columbia.

This is quite damaging to research and to individuals.

This is pure terrorism and cannot be legal. But litigation will take time...

As a Jewish faculty member at one of these institutions, I am saying right now, in the clearest tones possible: not in my name. This violent exploitation of Jews as an alibi for achieving Fascist ends is itself textbook antisemitism.

Pittsburgh scientists rally in face of federal funding turmoil Once quiet in the face of federal science funding curbs, researchers have begun to speak out. Science writers, though, won’t be convening in Pittsburgh.

Local researchers and scientists are speaking out and calling for support to counter threats from Washington D.C. that jeopardize their funding and work. A planned gathering of science writers, however, has been cancelled after Pitt and CMU pulled funding.
