5/5 I'm considering #NetBSD as a base for an i386/x86 collection of #FOSS that can run in #Qemu. If you're a NetBSD user, do you think it makes a solid platform for sharing a tailored #FLOSS collection?

4/5 I thought of #LFS with #musl, but modern #Linux builds continue to increase in complexity over time. Multiple dependencies and languages are often required to build programs from source. Most Linux distributions appear to be moving away from support for older hardware.

3/5 A #DOS based system such as #FreeDOS could be an option. It is an #OpenSource OS and can run on low resource hardware. However, #XFDOS already fills this niche.

2/5 I considered making a #PortableApps friendly collection of my favorite #FOSS programs for #Windows. However, Windows doesn't seem to be an ideal target. Newer versions don't support older computers well. It would require users to already own a non-Free OS just to run #FreeSoftware.

1/5 I'd like to put together a demo of lightweight #FOSS. Looking for an #OS to target. My goal is a minimal environment for low resource machines showcasing useful software with reproducible builds. If you have suggestions for lightweight platforms for sharing custom applications, let me know.

Happy #PublicDomainDay. Hope you enjoy using public domain source code in your own projects. See sites like Open Culture or Internet Archive for #PublicDomain #multimedia. Please encourage use of Public Domain and #CreativeCommons works. Help us spread the word, #DocumentFreedomDay2026 is in March.

Another fun idea for #NewYearsEve is to play some #Karaoke tunes. #ABCNotation is great for creating your own Karaoke #midi files. #TiMidity++ is a helpful midi player. What's your favorite #FOSS Karoke software.

What are your favorite #FOSS programs to run for the #NewYear?
One of my favorites any time I want to watch #fireworks is xfireworks:
packages.debian.org/sid/games/xf...
I even wrote a compatibility layer so I could run it with #SDL and #X11 was no longer a hard requirement.
