A map of everywhere in the contiguous U.S. that's seen accumulating snow or sleet since September 30, 2024.
Goofing around with maps tonight and used the NWS's seasonal snowfall analysis to show everywhere that's seen accumulating snow (or sleet!) since Sept. 30.
It's one of the rare seasons we've seen snow in all 50 states.

Went to Costco to restock on muffins, only to find out they were no longer selling the the big ones or the flavor I wanted. WTF, getting two packages of massive muffins for a cheap price was one of their best deals. Now customers have pay more to get less. I don't understand why Costco did this.

Financial statement today reminded me HOW GREAT IT IS when folks request that their libraries acquire books. ๐
Seriously, if you want a totally free-to-you way to help an author, submit a request with your local library. Those sales help us so much, in whatever format.

Around this same time of year a few decades ago, I watched my grandpa die. Tomorrow, there's a strong chance the same will happen with my grandma. I don't know what god came up with the idea of giving me death for Christmas twice, but I don't appreciate their sense of humor.

Coming up on the 20th anniversary of this portentous event, which claimed over 200,000 lives, almost all from the massive tsunami. The tragedy sparked significant advances in tsunami monitoring, and led directly to the advent of 24/7 operations at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center,

A map displaying various ocean regions related to the Challenger Expedition, with marked locations for stations across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Each region is labeled, noting the number of stations available for exploration. An inset map highlights a specific area in the North Atlantic.
You want to know about this site that lets you explore data collected by the HMS Challenger from 1872โ1876, an expedition that laid the foundation of oceanography. ๐

Small round clay piece painted to look like Jupiter in false color. The Great Red Spot is dark purple. The poles are deep red and magenta. The cloud bands are purple and light blue.
Jupiter in false-color ultraviolet. A new study suggests dark ovals in the poles are formed from a vortex thatโs created by magnetic field interactions with the ionosphere (upper atmosphere of Jupiter) and Jupiterโs moon Io. Itโs like an Earth-sized tornado stirring up haze in the atmosphere!

Sharks are older than the rings of Saturn.
This paper finds that the rings are no older than 400M years. Sharks date back to at least the Late Ordovician Period, 450M years ago.

Photo taken on The Road To Hana. The narrow road bends from the center to the left; the pavement is slick and reflective from the recent rain. A dense canopy of trees branches follows the curve. Everything is in a natural, rich green hue.
Landscape photo taken at a stream bank at Kepaniwai Park. The right side foreground is dominated by a tree in silhouette, with its roots snaking through the muddy ground beneath. The hill opposite the stream is covered in dense foliage, and it's in a natural, rich green hue. The shadowy foreground gives way to the highlights of sunlight glaring through the departing rain clouds.
Landscape shot of Puohokamoa Falls, taken at Garden of Eden Arboretum on The Road To Hana. The shot was taken from a cliff overhead, with the falls in the distant center, surrounded by dense rainforest foliage. Everything is in a natural, rich green hue... Except for the orange two birds of paradise flowers in the foreground.
Close-up portrait shot of a common/Indian myna (Acridotheres tristis). It's mostly front-facing and looking directly at the camera, though its head is slightly tilted in an almost quizzical manner. The brown and black feathers are contrasted with the bird's bright yellows around its eyes and beak. Taken at the Garden of Eden Arboretum.

Huh. I've finally gotten a 300 day streak on Duolingo. It's a habit; keeping that streak going is the only reason I'm still using it. It's good for practicing the alphabets, but I'm pretty sure I've learned more Japanese by having Hololive streams play in the background when I'm working on projects.
