Ok. Looks like you got old tech so I'm assuming old mobo. You may have to set jumpers on that HDD to be master. Boot from a floppy with MS-DOS that has the format program and then reformat the HDD. fat16 maybe for win98. If you get that done then see if you can boot straight from C

I hear you. Since the beginning of summer a family members laptop has been overworking draining battery and fan constantly on. Uninstalling a few updates gives some relief but it doesn't last long. Saw a post on the Linux feed that it's at the 3% adoption mark for games. Very encouraging

Puppy Linux is more an enthusiast's distro. I use it to keep alive a 32 bit PC 😀Depending on your needs, if you haven't already, try out Mint or Zorin. I use them also.

Re apps: because the desktop Linux user base is less than 5% there is no commercial incentive for companies to support the OS. So many artists using CSP are stuck with Win. Same with engineers using CAD

The OS or its kernel allows anyone to add a user environment to it. It enables diversity so one size doesn't fit all. It is not proprietary. The entire webs infrastructure is built on it and many large corps benefited from this freeware much like how we all benefit from basically free air and water

With Linux you get to use and keep your older tech which is good for the planet, it's more equitable for those who don't have the means like the majority of the world. It creates less of a disparity

Mint or Zorin are great for newcomers from Win. I use both. Z is supported by a company so there's a paid version. Linux typically doesn't have telemetry but some apps like browsers will unless you disable them. M$ tries to make it difficult to replicate their doc formats.
