The only thing that came along to allow the charts to slightly de-stagnate temporarily (and give the impression of evolving listener taste) was fine tuning and, due to label pressure (and a vaguely hail Mary,) allowing radio-only singles to have chart runs, which gave the industry some power back.

Bluntly, anyone complaining of modern chart stagnation as if it's new...well I guess they just don't have terribly strong memories.

There's a reason why the record for a number one run in 1990 was ten weeks achieved all of twice and by 2000 that benchmark had been passed by eleven different songs.
