A non-habit forming alternative to Xanax is hydroxyzine. I would definitely let my doctors know that the Xanax did not improve symptoms and see if they can offer alternatives. Hydroxyzine is believed to be a serotonin actor, so I don’t know whether it would be a terrible idea to take with an SSRI.

She may already know this, but sometimes just knowing what’s going on can help a bit with the anxiety. And when you try Xanax, but THAT doesn’t help, ugh! I would not want to be in that spot!!

psychopharmacological theory is that the SSRI creates an environment that allows the brain to build synapses over 3-ish weeks in the areas of the brain related to mood/anxiety. The actual Serotonin increase itself can act many different ways.
