US launches new bid to keep migrants detained by denying hearings, memo shows The Trump administration is launching a new effort to keep immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally detained by denying them bond hearings, an internal memo showed, a change that could further swell the numbers of those held.

A few days ago, DHS issued a secret new policy memo that attempts to keep (almost) everyone in ICE custody from having a bond hearing. If this works, almost no one will be released from custody while their case is pending. This is how mass deportations begin.

This was sent to my client who will never have $1.8 million to pay this absurd fine. She's never been arrested & is the mother of 2 US citizen children (one with serious health issues). She is also eligible for a visa based on severe human trafficking. This is who DHS is prioritizing right now.

After this vote, everyone will see a stronger ICE presence in our neighborhoods and in our daily lives - affecting both immigrants and citizens alike. Let’s keep showing up for one another and standing strong with our immigrant communities. We’re in this together.

4/5 Keep copies of ALL your immigration documents, including everything that you have ever sent to or received from the government. You should also have a copy of your passport, visa, and ID. A lawyer can help you much more quickly if they can review these documents to figure out your options.

3/5 Make a plan for your family. Do you have a child? Who will take care of them while you are detained? Does someone have access to your bank account so they can pay your bond or urgent bills? Consider a Power of Attorney or Consent to Petition for Guardianship.

This decision harms thousands of international students who came to the United States to study, who contribute to scientific research, and have done absolutely nothing wrong.

There is no better way to start your day as an immigration attorney than by being there when someone is granted asylum after years of working together. There is just nothing like that moment when they realize that they are truly finally safe.

Good things are still happening!

Excerpt from USCIS Request for Evidence dated April 17, 2025 with incomplete sentence where the due date should be.

Today USCIS sent a (completely pointless) "Request for Evidence" relating to a client's residency application. Typically, USCIS is VERY strict about due dates and will deny an application if they receive a late response to something like this. But this one seems to be missing some key information...

144. The Supreme Court's Late-Night Alien Enemy Act Intervention Just before 1:00 a.m., the justices (aggressively) stepped back into the Alien Enemy Act litigationβ€”in a decision suggesting that a majority understands that these are no longer normal circumstances.

Just before 1 a.m., #SCOTUS stepped back into the Alien Enemy Act litigation with a (remarkable) ruling that suggests, among other things, that a majority of the justices is tiring of the Trump administration’s Calvinball.

Mass. attorney says DHS told her to self-deport, despite U.S. citizenship Anyone can imagine the U.S. born Nicole Macheroni's surprise when she says she received an emailed letter from the Department of Homeland Security, telling her to self-deport within 7 days.

5/ CBP One was converted to β€œCBP Home,” an app that "helps" immigrants β€œself-deport.” Revocation of parole isn’t the same as a deportation order & this email does not initiate deportation proceedings. Anyone who has received this may still have options & should talk to an immigration lawyer NOW

Migrants who entered U.S. via Biden-era CBP One app stripped of legal status, told to leave "immediately" Migrants who came to the U.S. via a Biden-era online appointment app have been told to leave "immediately" in a message from the Department of Homeland Security.

4/ It appears that mass emails like the one I received have gone out to everyone who processed their parole through CBP One. I was, of course, not one of those people! The system doesn’t let you include an attorney’s contact info, so we still have no idea how I ended up on the list.

3/ One of the many ways that the Biden administration tried to manage asylum seekers at the border was through the β€œCBP One” app. It had all kinds of problems, but it did still help a lot of people enter the United States legally to seek protection

2/ Immigration "parole" has nothing to do with criminal parole, but it's the same idea. It's a form of managing lawful entry into the US, just the way that the parole system manages release of prisoners back into their communities after they have served their time. It is "legal" immigration.

1/ I never took DHS's scary-sounding notice that I had 7 days to leave the country too seriously, because it was obviously some kind of mistake. But what about the people the emails were actually aimed at? Let's talk a bit about immigration "parole" and what Trump is doing here
