this man and his amazing collaboratorsβ books taught me how to read! thank you for everything β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
31.07.2025 16:53 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0and FWIW I believe there are no βnormalsβ in public health - so we should endeavour for a range of options for a range of people - but there are definitely majorities (and definitely recognise how many of us - esp queer ppl + the minoritised- are traumatised by bad practice which collapses the two)
31.07.2025 07:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0no worries! addressing PrEP inequity, and education and awareness raising is a large slice of my work in public health - so always (strive to be) data, theory and community knowledge informed
31.07.2025 07:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0making sure - not for you, for anyone reading this.
31.07.2025 07:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0itβs really important that, especially at this stage of HIV crisis, GBMSM with access and knowledge about PrEP do not generalise from their experiences without reflection. it actually reinforces PrEP inequities and narratives that keep other people with need from access.
31.07.2025 07:32 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0βyour own realityβ β most people! thatβs the point, as proven by data about the diversity of communities with remaining PrEP need of which very sexually active GBMSM still represent a minority!
31.07.2025 07:31 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0(also itβs 2-24 hours before - to be very very clear)
31.07.2025 07:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0you have followed and seen enough of my work by now, surely, to know what sorts of positions i advocateβ¦
31.07.2025 07:19 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0did you read the context youβre responding to? thatβs the point *i* am making! Theres no one size fits all - so letβs not dictate people have to take their pills daily or βas prescribedβ (sic)
31.07.2025 07:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0it is excessively biomedicalising to expect someone to take a pill every single day not on the off chance they have sex that day but on the off chance they have sex completely spontaneously and unplanned.
31.07.2025 06:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0for gods sake: *most* people who have not had sex for months and months donβt eg spontaneously find themselves getting rawdogged in a backroom without any forewarning (for one, youβd be attending a club possibly in the hope of getting laid). you are not describing social realities.
31.07.2025 06:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0i will leave you to ponder whether you really think health promotion about PrEP is as effective as it if we tell people they need to take it every day if that is, in fact, not true. have a good one.
31.07.2025 06:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0you are generalising (your experience is certainly not reflective of all or indeed many people) and foreclosing possibilities that are useful to many (and indeed c/would have saved/ could (in resource low settings) save many lives.
31.07.2025 06:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0possible exposure only happens every day if you have sex every day, which is the antithesis of what this conversation is about.
31.07.2025 06:02 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0i donβt understand what your disagreement is with. the point is you donβt have to take PrEP every single day if you are not frequently having sex (which has been the context for this entire discussion). most people tend to know 2 hours before they have sex that they might or will have it.
31.07.2025 06:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0no itβs literally not. that is active disinformation. see: prepster.info
31.07.2025 05:40 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0exactly. even if the agencies are trying to be ~extra cautious~ thereβs no excuse to at least recommend 2-7 dosing for folks who arenβt have regular sex and have limited income, limited access to medication/medical care, or just have bone density/kidney health concerns.
30.07.2025 15:09 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0(tbc: i think injectables are an amazing advancement, but you can easily see priorities and bottom lines colluding with interpretation of evidence here)
30.07.2025 15:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0beyond frustrating and a source of significant inequities (no wonder expensive injectables being pushed and invited in with such alacrity stateside)
30.07.2025 15:05 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0(many prescribing clinicians have been educated about PrEP using data that is now a decade out of date. we know much much more now - and there is often, sadly, a lag as clinicians are too in demand and busy to access up-to-date training and info.)
30.07.2025 14:45 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0sharing things like this online without checking against sources can be harmful!
30.07.2025 14:44 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0no, not true. BASHH guidelines -
by panel of experts who review all evidence (not perspective of a single clinician - best not to rely on this) - state what is written in my post. summary of guidelines here in FAQ form: www.prepster.info/prepfaq
full guidelines here: www.bashh.org/resources/5/...
this advice is especially useful if accessing PrEP costs you money or if you donβt want to constantly have to refill your supply when you arenβt having regular sex.
30.07.2025 12:43 β π 7 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(explainer for first post: event based PrEP means taking 2 pills 2-24 hours before sex and 1 pill every day for two days after. this is also the same way you initiate PrEP if youβre going to use it daily!)
