Where has Gabe been?

With the start of Pride Month upon us, I wanted to give an update on where I’ve been and what’s been going on with me. People have noticed that I’m not as active on social media anymore, and there’s a lot of reasons for that.

The first is that I’m struggling along with everyone else with what’s going on in the US right now. As a trans man, it’s emotionally and mentally overwhelming to see all the horrible shit happening, much of which is aimed at taking away my rights and/or making my life more difficult. I’m also exhausted by all the discourse being used to divide us when we should be uniting, and I don’t have the spoons to deal with all of it. In short, social media has been triggering me and wearing me down, and it’s been hard to want to wade into that environment.

The second part of this is that last year was extremely traumatic for me. I was homeless for two months, and that was after losing friends because of the pettiness of people I trusted. When I moved to Minneapolis in September, I hoped I could leave all of that behind me, but the effects of it lingered and weighed down on my mental health. It was almost impossible to write, and I went through long periods of depression and anxiety that made editing for clients difficult as well. I’m also coming to terms with the fact that I’m physically disabled, which has been one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. There are days where the pain and fatigue are so bad that it’s hard to function, and I kept pushing through for the longest time, leading to burnout. Not to mention I had appendicitis and had to spend a month recovering.

The TL;DR version of this post is that I've been struggling mentally, emotionally, and physically, which is why I've been so absent on social media lately. But I'm using the first day of Pride Month as a fresh start, a chance to try again. Basically, I'm back, baybee.

Yesterday I referred to the fact that #Murderbot has a "teaching burden." In storytelling terms, I call this "information management." What does the audience need to know and by when? How can you get that info in at the optimal time without overwhelm? This show is doing a great job of it. 🧵

There’s also excellent work being done giving efficient exposition everywhere. When Mensah treats Murderbot with understanding and grace, I don’t find myself questioning why. She’s been shown as a parent of many children and leader of a collaborative group. The interpersonal skills are established.
