I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. i can only say that the original's honeybee inn sequence was extremely confusing to me, a 10-year-old at the time. i hope you've seen it, and if you haven't you should check it out!

I wonder if they'll ever do that. Capcom kind of an odd company sometimes. 3 got a PSP re-release that never saw the States, 4 and 5 haven't been touched since original release.

FF7R got a fair amount of censorship that SE got away with quite smoothly, the original has a lot more extremely gay content as well as sexually deviant storyline content in it actually.

Basically this. Yes. I also think there is probably some clever turn of phrase hanging in the clouds somewhere waiting to be plucked.

They're incredible. 4 in particular is absolutely staggeringly great, it's got the best sprite-based animation on the original PSX. The plot has some fabulous (and gut-wrenching) twists and turns, and the world feels very alive.

I should have written down some examples. (FF7R also had a lot of changes I thought were cool, and I liked seeing more of Midgar, etc.)

I have to say this is something of an aside, and I don't consider myself to be a master in Japanese. The characters' personalities sometimes come across as changed in translation. It's not like super dismal, but it's enough to be frustrating to someone with strong feelings about the original.

Anyway, I'm sure someone who has psycho feelings about this like me will make a patch for the PC version before too long and then I'll be ready to rumble on this version.

I just wish they had chosen a different word.

IMO, translation as is this weird art form unlike others and is about deep thought and being picky. Word overlap and relationship is a critical consideration. I can see why "Basic Skill" didn't work, it sounds a little odd, but then...

The new translation hack is so good. It's amazing how much more life a good fan translation can breathe (lol) into a game or series sometimes.

The BoF series itself is super dark and really only got darker from there, though again a game about indictment of the church. lol. lol

(In all fairness to them I started avoiding their translations a year or two ago after a recent attempt at replaying FF7R with recent improvements in my Japanese, so I don't have examples offhand. As my Japanese gets better some translations become less and less likable.)

I don't like their translations, it's like they have some weird policy of softballing material for an American audience, they are very willing to make changes that affect the nature of characters, and there are matters of some nuance in Japanese that they don't bother with.

I think in FF7 it may have been a matter of how they wanted to adapt characters to an American audience sometimes. In other cases I think Japanese just has subtleties of translation that people often disagree on, and everyone has an opinion, but... I have to say I think this studio is not great.

I don't know if it's a lack of skill or a choice or what. Playing FF games has become more cringe for me as my Japanese has improved because I often don't agree with their translations (FF7, FF16, etc), to the point that it's become another thing that put me off them over time.

If you were a translator working on a job would it not be enough for you that it's the first definition in some places for you to just choose another term?

The church and God are critical to the plot in FFT! The church is basically the Catholic church! Translation and editing did a dog shit job on this one, that's seriously awful, come on.

The original line was memorable and punchy as hell, people are STILL quoting it.

That is an awful translation. If it crossed my desk I would change it. They made it that to "Early Modern it up", it doesn't sound like speech and it doesn't sound like writing -- normally if someone switches to saying 'the Father' it's in a context where people have been talking about God!

FF4 - 6 were dope because they used to hire novelists to write their plots. FFT was amazing because the plot was created by the guy who created Tactics Ogre and Ogre Battle, and we can look at the interface and style to see where the vibe came from.

The hearts look awful to me because the original game didn't have any of this kind of tacky iconography. 'Fundaments' looks stupid to me because of this word overlap that we have to consider as part of the fundamental (lol) nature of translation -- it's the very nature of the project.

The original FFT was a super elegant game with an insane amount of polish on it, I think a lot of the changes are weird. The little hearts on dying characters look out of place, for example, as do some of the other interface changes. It's a veneer of false design.

This consideration is super important. In imitating Early Modern English and imitating somewhat a "Shakespearean feel", it's easy to make something that is either A) wrong or B) overwrought, both of which this translation studio accomplishes.

When you make a translation, you have to sit and look at the word you're changing something to and meticulously change it considering what other words the change overlaps with. Word A in Japanese might overlap with words in Japanese that word B doesn't overlap with in English, and vice versa.

14 and 16 also have mediocre writing, and 14 has a character that misuses the word 'fundament' grotesquely. :/

Things we read are expected to be readable and to have a certain amount of economy through editing. They don't misuse words. Translation is an art form.

It's simply incredible. Best story in the whole series, one of the best stories out of anything... Maybe best ever. Nothing can top it. The premise of Ramza as a hidden figure in history, the church, the moral grey tones...
