The phrase has a bit of an interesting history. It was coined by Herbert Spencer, and Darwin only adopted it after it became popular and when Wallace had pointed out that people misunderstood the term natural selection. Turns out people als misunderstood Survival of the Fitness.

Indeed if you rephrase "Survival of the fittest" with the evolutionary definition of fitness is almost a circular definition. Survival of those that get children that get children too. It is a bit of a stupid catchphrase that had a high memetic fitness.
