π¬ "These three gaps are already emerging and need addressing urgently. The technology will not wait for government to develop a policy response."
@kevinlatham.bsky.social unpacks our new research on the emerging gaps in how AI is being used in schools ‡οΈ

π¨ State schools are quickly falling behind as a new AI digital divide is opening up in the education system.
Our new report finds that private schools are way ahead on setting AI policies, dedicating staff to oversee its use, and providing training and resources ‡οΈπ§΅
Great to work with @kevinlatham.bsky.social on this important report on AI in schools (and the last project I worked on pre leaving the ST!)
Private schools are pulling ahead on the use of AI, action is needed from govt to ensure state school students can benefit from the technology -
The author of a @suttontrust.bsky.social report on how schools are using AI outlines some key findings β not least why teachers are still worried about the technology
16.07.2025 11:35 β π 4 π 2 π¬ 0 π 2It is fundamental for schools to manage their use of AI in a safe, timely and evidence-informed manner. For this they need to be fully supported by the Government.
16.07.2025 07:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And private schools are more likely to have a school-wide staff AI strategy than state schools
16.07.2025 07:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Across all schools, we found that AI tools were most widely used by teachers for lesson planning and prep (44%).
But private school teachers are more likely to have integrated AI across different aspects of their work, potentially reaping more of its benefits
The largest differences are between state and private schools in training, AI strategies and having a member of staff responsible for overseeing AI in the school.
16.07.2025 07:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In our latest report published today we reveal how socio-economic gaps are emerging between more and less advantaged schools in the use of AI. Check out the report here: www.suttontrust.com/our-research...
16.07.2025 07:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0AI use is growing rapidly in schools. But are teachers getting the right support and training to be able to use the technology safely and effectively? Is AI going to help close attainment gaps or widen them? Tomorrow the Sutton Trust's latest report 'Artifical Advantage?' addresses these questions

Weβve been working with the Department of Health and Social Care @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social & @karinsmythmp.bsky.social on ways to open up the medicine profession for working class young people.
This is a major milestone in widening access to careers in medicine β¬οΈ
Apprenticeships in England are short and off-the-job training requirements are loose, complex and widely ignored. In 2023 around 300,000 apprentices received less than their training entitlement. Meanwhile drop out rates are high.
17.06.2025 12:26 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Apprenticeships in England fall short by international standards, new research from the Sutton Trust today finds:

www.suttontrust.com/news-opinion...
A fascinating question but the dichotomy of priority for teacher's children vs places for disadvantaged families (as discussed) is false. It can be both. Hopefully schools will also make other changes to admissions policies to bring greater fairness to the system.
www.suttontrust.com/our-research...
However, it also highlights the need for education to equip all pupils with the necessary life and communication skills to be able to benefit from these processes, something not always happening...

Very good that the IFS did this but it doesn't make the slam dunk case for SureStart that many seem to think. A lot of the benefits are uncertain and I suspect the overall return is much lower than you'd get from e.g. just scrapping the two child limit.

Another important report reiterating the importance of geography in the (lack of) social mobility matrix:

Makes so much sense alongside the Sutton Trust's interactive map of social mobility published earlier this week:
www.suttontrust.com/opportunity-...
Depending on where you are in the country, if you are an FSM pupil, you could be 6X less likely to become a top earner; 10X less likely to get a degree; or nearly 7X less likely to pass Eng/Maths GCSE than your FSM peers.
These stats are so shocking! There's plenty more hard hitting stats below π
