Hi these weren't shipping to the US for a while, but now they are again! You might not know it yet but this rat is your new favourite cartoon character. When I finish my rat cartoon you will say "wow I love this rat, I'm glad I had purchased Ratβ„’ merchandise from wombot.studio/shop before seeing it"

One of many artists who I haven't seen since the Great Tumblr Exodus, but I feel like I've seen proto-versions of all these character designs in their old sketches

In the 2010s Australian bands were all called "Bear and Fox" and all the street art was wistful paintings of stags and wolves. A celebration of nature, but a different nature, on the computer. Boreal yearning in the stomp clap colony. We didn't have the technology to romanticise emus

I can no longer play from memory any of the Bach or Debussy or whatever that I learnt as a child doing piano recitals, but I can still play the arrangement I transcribed of the music from the snowboard level in Zoombinis Mountain Rescue

It doesn't matter if it gets harder to detect, it doesn't matter if you type "cool new style please" in the prompt. Like all mediums it will be better at some things than others, which will inform a visual vocabulary, which will have a "vibe"- that everyone associates with absolutely rancid shit

Advertisers clamber over each other to quickly make ads in cool new styles while they're still associated with cool new things, and not associated ads.

AI generated ads bravely buck that trend, by using the shit new style all consumers hate and associate with spam and propaganda

The quintessential life drawing class in Melbourne had a resident dachshund named Kevin. I haven't been in so long I assumed that was also lost to time, but apparently it's still going (since 2008!) I hope Kevin is still there

A stubby holder (you put beer bottles in these things) on a shelf in Devonport airport, of a cartoon tourist with a giant 2-headed Tasmanian devil behind him. It has a normal Tasmanian devil body but it tries to work in the Looney Tunes devil face even though it has zero bearing on actual Tasmanian devils. Theres some text around the side you can't see but it probably says "I ate tourists" because they always say that

On Tasmanian souvenirs you will see this motif of people, devils, teddies etc with 2 heads. It's never explicit, but the joke is: we are inbred! It's a cartoon congenital disorder. I have no idea how a tourist is meant to guess this, so I guess it's an in-joke, for Tasmanians to enjoy, in every shop

My best/worst one was years ago when I was high in the Gallery of NSW- so of course in the gift shop I bought one of those kids magic crystal garden growing kits. I put it on the counter and the cashier said "are you Felix Colgrave"

TY Beanie Boos "Godfrey" the Tan Halloween Spider 6" stuffed animal toy

After getting this spider beanie baby named "Godfrey" from a Chemist Warehouse discount bin, my 6 year old has been finding toy spiders and naming them "God Two", "God One", "God Zero", and mused this morning, "I'm thinking of having 100 Gods".

A Swarovski crystal sculpture of the Minion "Bob" from the Despicable Me movie franchise. Specifically as he appears in the 2015 spinoff "Minions", in the scene where he was temporarily crowned the King of England in 1968 after pulling Excalibur from the stone. He is missing his coronation robe. The sculpture is in a shop window in Wodonga and costs 1000 Australian dollars.

The fact that the Australian Broadcasting Company gave all the merchandising rights for Bluey to the British Broadcasting Company, is maddening. It's the AUKUS deal of animation. With all that money, just think, Australia would be able to afford TWO cartoons

People exemplify characters like Hello Kitty + Labubu as peak capitalism because they exist solely for merch.

100% true, but the designs have to appeal on their own-
Spiderman or Star Wars can move mountains of equally trash products, but uglier, where the only value is a reference. Kinda worse IMO

His comments were definitely critical of the tech, but also the implementation- how using a machine to spit out a messed-up/uncanny human likeness and saying "that's fine, this one is a monster person" just adds an extra layer to the indifference.

I think that's a take worth hearing also!

Gen AI sucks and would Miyazaki agree, yeah sure, BUT that quote about "an insult to life itself" is specifically about body horror being ableist. Someone procedurally made 3D bodies flail around and said "these could be zombies" and he said "that's really mean." A completely different valid take
