As the Right pushes hard to punish anyone who said anything they donβt like about Charlie Kirk, they will be offering you several narratives about it: (1) Weβre only doing this because YOU did it first, YOU invented cancel culture, turnabout is fair play (2) YOU pushed us into this

Kate Smith used to sing it for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970's instead of the SSB bc it was considered good luck (and they won the cup for 2 years). IMO it's a much better song than SSB (which OK ain't sayin' much).

Goodbye, Kevin Drum
"Take care of Donald Trump for me."
We will greatly miss our friend and longtime colleague Kevin Drum, as will all who knew him and his tremendous body of work. I had the privilege of editing Kevin for a spell, and I learned a lot from that, too. A top-notch thinker and writer, and a true mensch. www.motherjones.com/media/2025/0...

Question for those advocating that colleges be βneutralβ on political topics:
Do you believe Columbia University should not take a stance on whether the United States should revoke its students visas or green cards based on the administrationβs hostility towards their speech?

one of the stories Kevin Drum championed over his career was the causative link between environmental lead poisoning and other societal ills. I think it's one of the most important stories of the last 20 years and Drum was one of the main reasons people knew about it. RIP

RIP to one of my favorite bloggers, one I've been reading since the 00's. Kevin Drum always represented sanity: if I read something elsewhere that made me freak out, he'd usually be the one to pull me back. Not always, tho. Some things are worth getting angry about and he knew the difference.

This connected a lot of dots for me. I'm torn between deer-in-the-headlights fear and wondering where to direct my anger/cash.

#waymo this does not inspire confidence. There is no button to switch to English or Spanish and the languages are mixed anyway.

Dude, as a fan of yours and with all respect, I disagree. The paper should never be the story, and the Times handled this appropriately.

If youβve got grievances with public figures, you donβt post them on the internet. You compile them in an epic poem that imagines the intricate ways theyβll suffer in the afterlife and goes onto become one of the most enduring works of Western literature.

Really anything by Mieville, who has set out to be an anti-Tolkien fantasist. Perdido St is quasi-horror; Kraken is my favorite and is funny and for lovers of London.

Mr. Atrios, I love you, have been a fan for years. But please remember that gas cars themselves took 20-30 years to get infrastructure (refineries, gas stations, mechs) and had massive subsidy from policymakers. We incur horrible non-pecuniary costs for gas every day. So patience please.
