We followed up #ESAEuclid's near-infrared image of the Dark Cloud LDN 1641 with a comparison to the NIR 2MASS survey, and to a bespoke ground-based image in visible light.

Back on Earth, our planet's atmosphere and magnetic field work to protect us from the more harmful effects of this space weather. Instead, some of us Euclideans got to see the beautiful northern lights in action - even in light polluted areas! 😍

And, thankfully, space agencies regularly monitor the Sun using satellites so that we can anticipate incoming space weather events like this. Here's a view of last week's incoming storm from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)... 🕶️

This led to a couple of days of unusable data. 😬

Lasting damage is done to the telescope’s sensitive detectors, but this was planned for in the mission’s design and Euclid can take much more damage still before its instruments seriously degrade. 💪

At the peak of the storm, the increasing cascade of cosmic rays causes the (already huge!) data files to become too large for Euclid to transmit back to Earth and you begin to see the view from some of the detectors appear to disappear entirely! 😳

But those are no snowflakes. Instead, Euclid's detectors are being bombarded by the very same particles that caused us on Earth to see the aurora. Instead of a spectacular light show, Euclid sees a cascade of cosmic rays! ⚡️

What you're seeing there is Euclid's window to the Universe. It's the view of the VIS instrument, made up of 36 detectors arranged in a 6x6 grid. 🔲

But during the intense space weather last week, Euclid's usual view of stars and galaxies deteriorated into something resembling a cosmic blizzard! ❄️
