Like how RTS became tower defense which then became MOBA, I think the collect-a-thon became the narrative platformer genre and that became the open world sandbox game.

NES controler to SNES controller is a Pokemon evolution, while the N64 and Gamecube controllers are both cases of Digimon evolution. Wiimote + Wii U controller don’t count as they’re just consumer electronic. The Switch/2 controllers are tokusatsu forms and therefore spiritually akin to evolutions.

I click two buttons, POW, it’s asleep. No other videogame has ever made me feel that powerful. Team kills in Overwatch were less satisfying. OCVs in CvS 2 don’t make me feel as godlike.

My favorite game right now is Tamagotchi Paradise because it gives me the male fantasy of being able to tell my little creature to go to sleep and it does it instantly and without argument.
