"How do the characters’ intentions propel the plot forward?"

I feel like an entire book could be written on developing this one skill alone. It's easy to get caught up in little things that "could be cool," but serve no real purpose. Maybe comics can get away with that a little more?

Sewing together a story with different real-world mythologies is a lot of fun! My plot notes are full of Aztec and Norse fare. Also, getting a 1500's New World character to a specific time in Europe via historical events has been rewarding!
