The Most Efficient Traveler Isn’t a Bird or a Fish—It’s You on a Bike A famous graphic, now updated, compares locomotion in the animal kingdom

Remember this one? “Humans aren’t very efficient movers—until you put us on a bicycle, when we become some of the most energy-efficient land travelers in the animal kingdom.” Proven science via Scientific American @sciam.bsky.social #CityMakingMath

Update #IranProtests (63):

#DigitalBlackoutIran

Great advice received as a postdoc: Do the easiest thing.

I was 3 years into my postdoc and juggling projects w/nothing concrete = career crisis

I went to my advisor Paul Sternberg for help. He asked what was going on & what mutant had the strongest phenotype.

"Clone the easiest one."

It worked.

Whooooaaaa, this is extremely neat!

And spectropolarimetry (which is the best, and what we used in my first paper too!) is at its core 💙

In a nutshell: astronomers used the polarization of light to study the shape of a supernova explosion before it interacted with surrounding material.

Beautiful image! Is this an in vitro culture of iPSC-CMs? While there's clearly still myosin around, it's also clearly in a less dense/organised state. It would be interesting to see whether they're still capable of contraction in this state.

Incredible work! A study years in the making published in Nature. I’ve been waiting for this one.

Engineered heart muscle patches from iPSC improve cardiac function in non-human primates…and are stable/show evidence for remuscularization in a human patient! Wow! ❤️

A thread about being wrong:

5 years ago, we wrote a paper about how how newly enfranchised 16-year-olds vote in Austria. But we were wrong.

This year, @elisabethgraf.bsky.social, @schnizzl.bsky.social, Sylvia Kritzinger and I are setting the record straight: authors.elsevier.com/c/1juT5xRaZk...
