Bold red double LP sleeve of Dizzy Gillespie - Dee Gee Days: The Savoy Sessions, featuring a small, black on white abstract ink drawing of Diz playing in the centre, with a lot of very small white text that I can’t read properly underneath it.
Still jazzin’ (well, technically beboppin’), though I’ve finished The Little Nugget, and moved onto Hans Fallada’s Alone In Berlin, which is, erm…less jolly.

LP sleeve of the Chico Hamilton Quintet’s soundtrack to Sweet Smell Of Success on Brunswick Records. Cover features a black and white still/publicity shot of Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster in the film (please take a moment if you can, to marvel at Burt’s incredible jawline), and the film’s name and stars in bright red. Too left is a snapshot of the band, with ‘The CHICO HAMILTON QUINTET PLAYS JAZZ THEMES RECORDED FOR THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE MOTION PICTURE’ to its right.
My brain’s tied itself in knots now, so I’m going to listen to this, and read some Wodehouse.

And aye, the Ska… one has far too many genres together, but a lot of them feed into each other, and I don’t have enough knowledge to, for example, decide that THIS Sugar Minott single should be in Reggae, but THAT one should be in Dancehall.

Tried to come up with a short list of categories to start sorting these 5000+ songs into separate lists. Even lumping some genres together, I’ve already got 17 categories. This is never getting done, is it?

BBC TV test card (test card F, used in the 1990s but featuring the same image they’d been using since the late 1960s).
Central image, in circle, shows a young white girl in a red dress (left) playing noughts and crosses on a blackboard with a clown doll dressed in green (right). Surrounding this is a grey background with colour scale white-black to left of central image, different white-on-grey patterns on the rest. Bordering the grey zone are patterns in black and bright, printer ink sort of hues.

HMV advert, which, under the logo and the word ‘Sponsored’, reads:
Odds on we sold your great grandparents their turntable, and we’re still the tech experts
1) My youngest great-grandparents would now be in their early 100s.
2) They weren’t called turntables then.
3) None of them would have been able to afford a gramophone anyway.
4) They would have bought it from Windows/another local dealer if they could have.
5) FUCK OFF.

Top of an HMV advert, which, under the logo and the word ‘Sponsored’, reads:

So many things about this stupid, illiterate advert that have reduced me to eye-popping rage (not difficult, granted) that I’ll have to enumerate them in a separate post. But ‘tech experts’ when the only turntables you sell are cheaply made, godawful suitcase players is a start.

‘But Rachel, you’re firmly a Record Person, who also has a slightly unreasonable amount of CDs - what’s with this digital tomfuckery?’. Relax, it’s essentially one big shopping list, & unlike Discogs, doesn’t send me 8 bajillion emails a week about a compilation I wanted to remember the name of.

I get (unreasonably, and usually just internally) annoyed enough that, in most record shops, ska gets included in reggae, funk gets included in soul etc. Don’t get me started on the ones that lump everything pre-1960 that isn’t obviously jazz together. Or the concept of ‘easy listening’…

Just discovered that, after you’ve ‘liked’ 5000 videos (all songs in my case), YouTube stops adding to the count on the playlist. I really might need to start sorting them into genre-specific lists soon, but what about the crossover stuff? How will my irritating little brain cope?

IF A MONKEY randomly

for an infinite amount of time
will eventually write the complete

stands to reason that Shakespeare
randomly twanging strings on a

Black LP sleeve of the two disc ‘The Prodigious Bechet-Mezzrow Quintet & Septet’, featuring a black and white photograph of an older Sidney Bechet playing clarinet, the title in white-on-pale blue font, and a gold hype sticker reading ‘ALBUM 2 DISQUES’ (it’s on a French record label), the gatefold LP sleeve being propped open atop a turntable, lid down, already playing the first disc.
The faded blue spine of The Little Nugget by P.G. Wodehouse, in the 1934 Methuen cheap edition, against the arm of a dark green leather settee.
Jazz time now, as I’ve got a new-to-me P.G. Wodehouse burnin’ a hole in my metaphorical, and I always find the two a winning combination.

Dark blue paperback copy of Rhythm & Blues In New Orleans, by John Broven, sitting on a cream diamond-patterned rug with red, pink, teal, and mustard diamonds visible.
Took forever to finish reading this, mostly thanks to my quest to hear every song mentioned (ongoing, and YouTube doesn’t have everything, but that’s future crate-digging fun in the bank), but it’s quite simply one of the best books on music I’ve ever read.
