He had been diagnosed with cancer in May 2021. Known for his acute observations of the English class system, Parr’s images covered sunbathers and Conservative clubs, village fetes and coffee mornings, often in vivid colour and with more than a dash of humour. His iconic 1986 photobook The Last Resort: Photographs of New Brighton captured working-class holidaymakers in the Wirral, Liverpool and helped mark a sea change in British documentary photography, from the gritty, black and white style of the past towards a cheekier and more colourful style. Ah, I was at Brighton and didn’t see much of this Sort Of Thing.

There was someone two rows in front of us live-streaming whole chunks it, apparently using the selfie cam, until he was asked several times to cease and desist.

It’s Stereolab. He went to see Stereolab, again. Honestly, it’s not a problem, he can stop any time, it just so happens that a few gigs got announced within a fairly short space of time. This is the last one for at least, er, a week.

Gobsmacked by the length of the merch queue at Stereolab tonight, nothing like that at Brighton yesterday. Will have to leave picking up an apron, colouring book and ice cube tray until, ahem, Brixton next week.

Popped to Brighton to see @stereolabgroop.bsky.social last night; not much time for shopping but managed to get to The Record Album and Resident for a couple of bits.

(Wire was the cheapest I’ve seen in ages to have the 7”, probably because the sleeve isn’t the best, but the LP seems to be fine.)

Scrivener is great, not that I’ve ever written anything longer than a few thousand word pieces on it.

Zero tolerance for doomerism. Stop lazily accepting that everything is screwed forever. Stop normalising low expectations. That’s part of the problem & it’s what the bastards want. It’s also a product of privilege. People in more desperate situations don’t have the option to just sit back & shrug.
