I went to hear him speak about the importance of science communications a couple of times. Tried to get him to speak with NASA. Couldn't get him interested and never really got a reason. But I applaud his dedication to breaking down science so everyone can be involved.

Spaceflight is an inherently dangerous endeavor—one where only mission success is acceptable. Things can and do go wrong. But when it matters most, failure is not an option. But when tragedy does occur, we owe it to those we’ve lost to ensure their sacrifice was not in vain.

Whether you love the vehicle or question it, there’s something undeniably stirring about watching a rocket bound for the Moon roll out to the pad. For a moment, the debates over budgets and priorities fall away, replaced by a shared focus on the mission itself: extending humanity’s reach.

Each year I’m included I want to pinch myself and wonder what I would tell that wide-eyed child who was a fan in Nashville growing up. I’m honored.

Well, this wasn’t in the local forecast.

Happy birthday Charlie Duke. Few people embodied selfless dedication and service to our nation. Long after his official duty had ended, he continued to give generously of his time and talent. He never turned down a request and always met every ask with warmth & kindness, no matter the inconvenience.

I’m deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jane Goodall. I was fortunate to interview her in Louisville in 1983, and even in that brief encounter, her dedication and sense of purpose were unmistakable.

Happy belated birthday to our favorite aerospace beagle… from the nam of spacecraft to employee awards for safety (Silver Snoopy).

Jim Lovell was a hero in space, but an even greater one at home—his love of family and belief in America’s future will shine on.

An update on agency leadership…

I used to include this photo in budget presentations for Communications, partially tongue-in-cheek. The office was never funded properly, but we were creative. I’m not sure how they do it now. There’s no fat left to trim. There could be real amputations.

As I get ready for the DC fireworks, I’ll remember last night’s Navy Yard show after the Nats victory and forget about today’s loss.

That’s why you test down here… so it doesn’t go bad up there. I bet they already have a good idea what happened. The one thing to remember about a solid rocket motor… when it lights, it’s lit. There’s no turning it off.

It would be nice if DC scooter riders, motorcycles, and even bicycles would stop lane splitting. Traffic laws apply to all of us, not just motor vehicles. Show me where it says, “If you’re delivering dinner, you can ignore the laws if you try to be careful.”
