Today we honour the trans lives stolen by violence and discrimination.

In love and solidarity, we recommit to the fight for safety, dignity, and a world where trans people are valued, and free.

Canada’s premier speculative fiction magazine calls it a day after 35 years | CBC Arts Edmonton-based On Spec, which showcased authors like Julie E. Czerneda, Tony Pi and a young Cory Doctorow, will publish its final issue in December

I had the privilege to talk with Diane Walton, long-time editor of On Spec, Canada's premier sci-fi and fantasy magazine, as she heads into retirement and the publication wraps an impressive 35-year run.

The Illustrated Junior Classics edition of The Count of Monte Cristo in third grade, had me picking myself up after every beating I got at school (was bullied, a lot), muttering that "All of human wisdom is summarised in the words wait and hope" and my gateway to older books in general.

This image briought back memories. Thank you. I am quite sure they would be very clearly β€˜not good’ if looked at again, compared to the books they scaled down but, yes, a gateway.

What a lot of people don't understand is that strikes are *expensive* and not all of the unions have adequate war chests to just drop everything today.

I think this is a solid plan, while working toward escalating labour actions.

β€œAUSTERITY. AUSTERITY. AUSTERITY.”

If you say it three times, PM Carney appears, his terrifying budget in hand, slashing public services we count on and the workers who deliver them.

Austerity is lazy, reckless and short-sighted and puts everyone in Canada at risk.

AI can help authors beat writer’s block, says Bloomsbury chief Publisher last week reported jump in revenue in academic and professional arm thanks to AI licensing deal

You know what, Nigel? Writer’s block isn’t really a thing. The real β€œblock” is trying to survive in a capitalist system, in which creativity has been devalued & publishing taken over by managerial types who only understand productivity & see writers as β€œbrands.” www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Two robots fighting at the corner of Jasper Avenue and 108th street in downtown Edmonton.

Wondering what our proposed Worlcon venue would look like if it were in the process of being destroyed by gigantic robots, check out the anime Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.

The city is portrayed fairly accurately, though Edmonton has slightly fewer gigantic robots in real life.

I tweet: "people who see 50% of their monthly paycheck go to rent don't care if a candidate eats with their hands. they want to hear what your candidate is going to do about housing."

who creates the lively art and music scenes if the rent is too high? who makes cultural life? who serves you food or washes your dishes? who creates the fancy little restaurants that draw you to urban living? affordable housing is at the heart of what makes city life worthwhile.

If magazine teams were paid fairly and writer rates increased, mag budgets would be $200k+. Minimum.

If you can, subscribe. That’s regular, renewable revenue mags can use to plan for the future.

This industry is sustained on free labour and free content.

Passion is high, but so is burnout.

Snickers bar and a metal whistle

Parents, please check your kids’ candy this Halloween. I’ve just found an ancient metal whistle with the inscription β€œQUIS EST ISTE QUI VENIT" inside a Snickers bar. I blew it and heard a note of infinite distance, and now I’m haunted by a figure in pale, fluttering draperies. Be safe.

Instead of negotiating a flexible remote work model that saves taxpayers money, supports local communities, and keeps cars off the road, the federal government forged ahead with the costly plan to open coworking spaces that didn’t even last 6 months.

if you're in Alberta and you want your flu and covid shot in 2026 - yes you read that correctly - you have to preorder them right now. So here's the link. go do that. Just in case none of those people get removed from power by then.

please repost this, as the province seems bent on killing us.

People who opposes taxes are people who don't realize they're already benefiting from us acting collectively at scale.

Mostly dudes who can't conceive of their own disabled future and think that roads are facts of life instead of major ongoing human projects.

So here are ten early women writers of the Gothic to give an idea of the range of things that women were creating in the period!
