teaching Public #InternationalLaw for the second time was again a gratifying experience. Though it feels doctrinal to me at times, students take a lot from the course. Being able to discuss in real time developments like the ICJ's opinion on greenhouse gases a couple of weeks ago is enthralling.

In the history of political thought what we now call βLeftistβ views are, actually, deeply underrepresented. A mere minority of viewpoints.
When undergrads first learn political thought in US universities, they learn 75% ancient, religious, & βconservativeβ thought.

When we teach the history of political thought, Iβm not afraid to give the best account of those views I disagree with.
Our job is to give students the tools to decide for themselves the strength & salience of philosophersβ views.

I teach thinkers I disagree with; I teach thinkers I, actually, despise.
I was dismayed when I noticed I gave the most convincing lectures on the thought of philosophers I disagree with in core of my being.
Why? Because I Know the power & sway of their views.

Scholars that teach the history of political thought understand the legacy & salience of past views.
Even when those views cut against our own, personal convictions.

In my time in our field, I have come across very few people who proselytize βleftistβ views in teaching political thought
#politicaltheory #politicalscience

Why is that?
The majority of the history of political thought is religious or easily falls into our contemporary category of βconservativeβ thought.

This wonβt convince anyone whoholds this view...
But, people who teach political thought, myself & everyone who I respect that does it,
we teach a tremendous amount of βconservativeβ & religious views in offering an account of the history of political thought #politicaltheory #politicalscience
