Structural competency prepares future physicians to recognize that social & systemic inequities directly shape patient health outcomes. When medical students are taught to understand this, theyโre better equipped to provide effective and compassionate care.

For example, AIAN & Hispanic people are more than twice as likely to be uninsured, and AIAN & Black people have shorter life expectancy compared to white people.
Pregnancy-related mortality rates are also more than 3 times higher among Black birthing people than among white birthing people.
A new @kff.org policy brief on racial and ethnic inequities shows that across most measures of health, healthcare access, and social determinants of health, Hispanic, Black, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) people fare worse than white people.
