It’s two and a half months since I lost my best friend Fay. It plunged me into a grief so profound it shocked me. In the great scheme of the world it seems a small thing I suppose but it was shattering.

Here in the UK too, it’s very worrying. We’re currently ‘enjoying’ a visit from the President who, I’m happy to say, is not uniformly welcome.

Thanks for this. I’m carer for my very elderly mother and get no financial support as I’m a pensioner myself. I recently had a carers assessment which was sort of useful but there’s not a lot on offer for those of us who spend 24 hrs a day 7 days a week caring for relatives.

When I was young, being a carer simply wasn’t talked about. We’ve come a long way since then, but government still all too often ignores the millions of carers across Britain.

I’m not the first person to make this observation, but this being the biggest story in the world at present really speaks to how much Twitter still serves as a universal assignments editor for English-language journalists.
