"It will not mean energy security for all, & the costs of LNG infrastructure & the instability of price hikes & geopolitical rifts will be passed on to consumers and households, a particular concern where LNG is sourced from the US. LNG does not provide a solution for energy security concerns." 4/4

"LNG is mostly made up of methane, a highly-potent greenhouse gas and therefore, LNG, even in small quantities, has a significant impact on climate change. Experts have highlighted that any new source of methane is liable to compromise compliance with Ireland’s Climate Act." 2/4

Trócaire's Sinéad Loughran spoke yesterday to Oireachtas Committee on the Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve Bill. This bill has the potential to greenlight a state-led €900m LNG terminal on the Shannon Estuary. From an environmental, human rights, and economic viewpoint, it is utterly reckless. 1/4

'LNG is far more polluting than any other fossil fuel that we have in our current system. The government can't go ahead with approving this bill.'

As part of Stop Climate Chaos, we protested at the Dáil today as key pre-legislative meetings for the Strategic Gas Emergency Reserve Bill were held.

This LNG project will cost €900m of taxpayer money, and will then need to be phased out within 10-15 years, according to O'Brien. This is not to mention locking Ireland into more fossil fuel use while we're already facing up to €26b in fines for failing to meet our legally-binding climate targets.

The incoherence of introducing new fossil fuel infrastructure in the midst of a climate emergency cannot be understated.

Thanks to @codohertynews.bsky.social for highlighting Minister Darragh O'Brien's plans to bypass planning regulations for this LNG terminal.

We all wish the Irish government had passed the Occupied Territories Bill years ago, but we must not stop pushing them to ensure it's passed ASAP!

It is too late for many, but the Irish government must act before it is too late for all.

Passing the OTB can still have a meaningful impact.

The legislation would also deem the facility automatically compliant with Ireland’s Climate Law without undergoing a proper assessment.

This is completely unacceptable!

It creates a dangerous precedent that bypasses laws & democratic processes, and could affect much more than just this facility.

Minister for Environment Darragh O'Brien is attempting to rush through approval for a €900 million LNG reserve at the cost of the taxpayer & the planet.

The proposed legislation would give the Minister full responsibility for the planning application & completely change the normal planning process.

The West Bank violence has the same intentions as the Gaza genocide. Trócaire's Seán Farrell has been visiting villages, seeing how Israeli settlers are driving Palestinians off their land.

These settlements are illegal. Trading with them is wrong. Ireland must pass the Occupied Territories Bill!

The future of Gaza must be determined by the Palestinian people, for the Palestinian people. Trump's Board of Peace will not deliver peace.

We must never stop doing all we can for real, meaningful peace and real, meaningful justice for the Palestinian, and other oppressed people, around the world💪

Seán Farrell is in the West Bank seeing how Israeli settlers are using ever-increasing violence and intimidation to force Palestinian people off their land. This is what illegal occupation looks like.

We must oppose this occupation and keep supporting these communities in their fight for justice.

An Coimisiún Pleanála's decision for a commercial Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at Tarbert, north Kerry is due by January 13th.

If approved, this would be absolutely devastating for Ireland's climate and human rights obligations - let us explain why ⬇️
