If someone is working to be more vegan with limited options, I’m here for it and happy to support them. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s making the best choices with what’s available.

This isn’t just about access; it’s about choice. Everyone deserves the option to eat healthy without it feeling like a financial or logistical marathon. No one should have to debate between buying lettuce or paying rent.

And even when there is fresh food nearby, it’s often way more expensive. Organic blueberries shouldn’t cost more than your hourly wage. “Health is wealth” shouldn’t be literal, but here we are.

Food deserts don’t happen randomly. They exist because of systemic inequality—underfunded communities, disinvestment, and decisions that prioritize profits over people. Meanwhile, Whole Foods is chilling in the suburbs like it’s VIP access only.

For folks in these areas, “healthy eating” isn’t a cute Pinterest board; it’s a privilege. Imagine trying to meal prep when your only options are instant noodles and chips. You can’t “just eat clean” if your closest spinach is two bus rides away.

If you’ve never heard of a food desert, think of it as a neighborhood where finding fresh produce is harder than finding parking in downtown Portland. No grocery stores, no farmers’ markets—just overpriced corner stores with sad bananas, if you’re lucky.

Housing-first works it just needs funding. And real talk? We need more housing, period.

Most of us are closer to being houseless than millionaires.
