Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales Husband of Jonathan Joss My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done. Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic. When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw. While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired. Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life. Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future. He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other. I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved. To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family. My focus now is on protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honoring the life we built together. If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband. To the Editor: Re: “Larry Kramer, Playwright and Outspoken AIDS Activist, Dies at 84” ( Obituary, May 27): Daniel Lewis’s obituary claims that Kramer liked “provocation for its own sake [...] and this could sometimes overshadow his achievements as an author and social activist.”. As a gay man its hard not to read statements like this from the “paper of record” as a passing swipe at a legendary activist who rightly embarrassed it. As Larry said in his speech “We Are Not Crumbs, We Must Not Accept Crumbs”, “And always, we went after the New York Times for their shockingly, tragically, inept reporting of this plague”. Kramer’s obituary could have been a great opportunity to reflect on the New York Times’ record of failure during the AIDS epidemic and acknowledge them in Larry’s memory. Instead, the New York Times has chosen to ignore that record of failure in favor of denigrating the tools the marginalized have to hold the powerful to account. Reflecting on this capstone to these earlier failures, perhaps it would have been more appropriate for the New York Times to leave the Obituary blank, subtitling it “Larry would have wanted us to shut up”. Funny how there’s rarely any reciprocity from their rightwing counterparts when there are hate crimes & murders against Palestinians, Arabs, & Muslims.

I’m horrified by the murder of two Israeli embassy staffers at an event in DC last night.

The fact that the gunman said he did it to “free Palestine” makes me nauseous. Murdering people for their nationality is never acceptable and this violence hurts Jews, Israelis, *and* Palestinians.

You don't have to care about the Founders. We should have as little reverence for them as they themselves had for all the hallowed things they left behind. Less actually, because they are dead. We are here. They are not. What kind of America do we, the living, want to have?

So to recap - randos on the X claimed to "decode" the tattoos (that multiple experts on MS-13 have said had nothing to do with MS-13), someone at the White House took that idea and crudely put "MS-13" on the image, and Trump actually believed that was what the tattoo said. 🤦‍♂️

We will fail often. Many people are bad. Many people don't know much. But people looking at much worse, less knowledgeable electorates — people who literally couldn't read or write, who had been intentionally kept from political information — worked to expand democracy anyway to our eternal benefit.
