Elon v. Hannah: You Make The Call The text messages started mid-morning on Election Day.

If you know what fusion voting is, and you know they have fusion voting in NYC mayor elections, then you know more than Elon Musk.

Actually it’s a lot more rigorous than that. When gerrymandering was before SCOTUS in Rucho, statisticians/poli sci scholars proposed various statistical tests for it. One of them was used in HR1. The issue is basically if the map produces way more β€œwasted votes” for one party than another.

How about this: Elizabeth Warren couldn’t win a senate race is Nebraska. But Dan Osborn running as an independent might. But Dan Osborn running as a Dem would be toast.

Bitter primaries hurt high-profile candidates' chances in the general election, Stanford research shows Stanford political scientist Andrew Hall found that contentious primaries that receive heavy media coverage and voter attention tend to produce nominees who do less well in the general election.

Thanks. I can’t access the article. And this isn’t my field. Just a nonexpert trying to understand what the finding is and what the basis for it is. Found this piece, but it didn’t really help.

Thank you. I found the abstract kinda unclear. But if that’s what it means, then we know Platner v Mills won’t be a β€œdivisive primary,” because Maine does not have runoff primaries. So maybe Jake’s claim is correct, but it’s not supported by the research he cited.

I haven’t read the paper you linked to, but what is a β€œdivisive primary”? And do we know Platner v Mills (and others) will be a β€œdivisive primary”?

The fight to build faster in California Buffy Wicks and Scott Wiener explain how they're reforming CEQA, the California law that lets anyone with a lawyer delay housing projects for years.

There was a good episode of Volts about these issues a little while back. I think it was this one:

I still like early 70s art rock, like Yes and Jehtro Tull.

That will be hard to beat.

Handball reform: foul is either (1) deliberately handling the ball or (2) gaining an advantage by inadvertently handling the ball. Both treated the same if outside the boxβ€”DFK. But inside the box, 1 is a pen but 2 is IFK from location of foul.

Selling Madueke for less than they paid for Joao Pedro. Another Chelsea masterstroke.

Kinda amazing that everyone knew he wanted to go & we wanted to sell & we still got Chelsea to overpay.

I actually saw Blossom Dearie live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in LA! She was kinda old by then, but she still had it.

I was skeptical when I heard Brighton are interested in signing Milner for another year. But this piece says a lotβ€”how serious the injury was, how much he helps the team off the pitch, and how much the young guys value him. I’m sold.

Exciting loanees coming back (Yalcouye etc.). Exciting new guys coming in (Tzimas etc.). The future is Brighton.

And I feel like this is a missing piece from a lot of Lakshya Jain’s stuff about running moderates in competitive districts. Sure would help to have a party that can actually strategize and implement strategy. Then it could do candidate selection, manage the party’s brand, etc.

Kind of a pipe dream atm but what do you think happens to all this in a proportional representation system? Would it help in any way? Or is humanity doomed to be ruled by centrists?

Kind of a comparative poli sci question I guess.

Does "persuasion" mean voting contrary to party registration? Or voting contrary to past/most recent vote? Or what? I keep seeing "persuasion" in election analysis, and it seems to be a technical term in the discourse, and I'm never sure exactly what it means.
